Mission
Support public education
in York County by developing
resources to encourage
educational innovation, promote
and recognize excellence,
and address the needs
of all students, faculty and
staff.
Message from the President
York Foundation for Public Education, Inc.
It is indeed my privilege to transmit the
2008-2009 Annual Report of the York
Foundation for Public Education, Inc.
Despite the dismal economic conditions
we all experienced this past fiscal
year the Foundation turned in its best
performance to date. Membership on
our Board of Directors is at an all time
high and we raised more funds this year
than ever before. The Tenth Annual YFPE
Golf Tournament set a record for both
participation and fundraising. We had a
field of 132 golfers and our net income of
$28,000 was the highest ever achieved.
Our prudent investment last year with
the Peninsula Community Foundation
served us very well as our $60,000 investment
grew at a respectable rate, while
many other nonprofits lost money. On
the fiscal front we received wonderful
news at our Annual Dinner Meeting from
Dan and Peggy Nieman, owners of the
Grafton and Yorktown Wendy’s. As our
first annual corporate donors last year,
we were thrilled to learn that not only
were they going to renew their commitment,
they increased it from $7,000 to
$10,000!
Our success in fundraising was paralleled
by our stellar efforts in our core mission
of supporting and enhancing York County
Public Schools. We funded a record
level of instructional and school wide
grants with $12,000 as well as student resource
development funds of $8,750. In
addition, we funded $4,700 in teacher/
para-professional scholarships, plus our
first annual Michael J. Tylavsky, Jr. scholarship
for $500. We began and ended our
year with $2,100 donated to our Teachers
of the Year Awards at each school level.
The Foundation has continued to be
blessed by a cadre of dedicated volunteers
and business sponsors and this past
year was no exception. While the Foundation
is truly a team effort I would like
to recognize the exceptional efforts of
our Vice-President Myrtle Soles. Myrtle’s
work to raise funds and donations for
the Golf Tournament and leadership to
implement our second annual auction
luncheon are simply extraordinary. A former
York County educator, Myrtle continues
to be the quintessential Foundation
board member and officer.
I would also like to thank our Superintendent
Dr. Eric Williams for his support
and leadership this past year. Dr. Williams’
faith in the Foundation and constant
awareness of how we can play a role in
his vision for an even better York County
School system is inspiring. My last thank
you goes to our School Board liaison
Linda Meadows who has been a stalwart
Foundation supporter and advisor. This
comprehensive team of supporters has
allowed us to exceed our expectations.
The Foundation is truly on the brink of
taking our work to a higher level however
we need your help. I challenge our
citizens, civic organizations and businesses
to initiate or increase Foundation
support. Quite simply our future depends
on it.
Sincerely,
Jim Noel
10th Annual YFPE Golf
Tournament Hits
All Time High
What a great day for golf! On June 24th,
2009 the 10th Annual YFPE Golf Tournament
was held at Kiskiack Golf Club in
Williamsburg. One hundred thirty two
golf enthusiasts, on thirty three teams,
enjoyed a continental breakfast, a challenging
round of golf, great weather and
lunch. Through the cooperative efforts
of area businesses, the tournament was
a huge success. The Tournament raised
nearly $38,000 with net proceeds of almost
$28,000. One-hundred percent of
the net proceeds will fund student scholarships,
teacher grants and recognition
of innovation and excellence in education
scholarships.
A special recognition is extended to everyone
who supported the YFPE Golf
Tournament. We are especially appreciative
of the generosity of our corporate
sponsors, business contributors, participants
and the efforts of volunteers.
For the sixth consecutive year, four of
the area’s Walmart facilities participated
and were tournament event sponsors.
In addition, Bay Electric played a major
role as an event sponsor for the second
year. Grafton Dodge and the York
County DARE Program again sponsored
the Hole-In-One. This year we had the
fortunate opportunity to bring on several
new sponsors which significantly
increased our fundraising efforts. Our
new sponsors for 2009 included Oyster
Point Construction, Spain Construction,
Rotary Club, Coca-Cola, Inc., Henderson
Construction, ASI Security Systems, Hudson
Architects and Little Tikes Virginia
Playground Services.
YFPE designated the 10th Hole in memory
of Al Meadows, a wonderful friend of
the Foundation who passed away in the
spring of 2009.
“In addition to the great weather, many
of the Board Members actively participated
on the golf committee and were
instrumental to our great success this
year,” said Peggy Myatt, YFPE Director.
“Once again, the annual YFPE golf tournament
surpassed my expectations on
