News Release
The Braun ThermoScan ® IRT 4520
the only infrared ear thermometer with a pre-warmed tip and guidance system to
ensure accurate, repeatable readings
- the most used and recommended brand by Doctors and Paediatricians
September 2010 – In a recent study of almost 650 pediatricians and general
practitioners in the UK, France and Germany by GfK Custom Research
France, the Braun ThermoScan® IRT 4520 ear thermometer with
ExacTemp Technology was voted number one by doctors.
The Braun ThermoScan® IRT 4520 infrared ear thermometer with a pre-
warmed tip and guidance system to ensure accurate, repeatable readings
gives peace of mind to parents by giving fast, easy-to-use and hygienic
temperature measurement.
“Since their launch 20 years ago, Braun thermometers have been recognised
for their accuracy and quality,” said Emanuela D’Aloisio, Brand Manager
Healthcare at Kaz Europe SA, the manufacturer of the Braun ThermoScan®
under license to the ‘Braun’ trademark.
“Braun continues to be a pioneer in temperature measurement and the
popularity of the ThermoScan® IRT 4520 with doctors and paediatricians only
confirms this,” Emanuela D’Aloisio added.
The Braun ThermoScan® IRT 4520 measures the infrared heat generated by
the eardrum and surrounding tissue. Since the eardrum shares blood supply with the temperature
control centre in the brain, the ear accurately reflects the core body temperature. Changes in core
body temperature are reflected sooner in the ear than at other sites. “This characterises the ear as
an excellent site to measure temperature,” concluded Emanuela D’Aloisio.

Unlike other ear thermometers, the Braun ThermoScan® IRT 4520 features a patented pre-warmed
tip that brings the thermometer to a temperature close to that of the human body, improving accuracy
by avoiding major temperature differences. This feature minimises the cooling effect on the ear canal
that can result from using room-temperature tips.
A clinical study* has confirmed that the small, soft speculum and flexible tip allow accurate
temperature readings to be carried out with great care on newborns, making the Braun
ThermoScan® IRT 4520 suitable for every generation.
It also features a unique guidance system to ensure that the probe is stable within the ear and gives
an audible/visual signal when the temperature has been successfully taken. Memory stores the eight
last temperature readings to allow the user to monitor temperature changes.
To ensure the accuracy of every temperature reading, a new clean lens filter should be used for
each measurement. Replacing the lens filter for each measurement virtually eliminates the risk of
cross contamination.
The Braun ThermoScan® IRT4520 is available in major pharmacies at the recommended price of
€44.99 - 54.99. It comes complete with a protective storage case, 2 AA batteries and 21 disposable
filters.
