MAJL IS SUKAN NEGERI SARAWAK
Tourism – Sports
The Malaysian Games or Sukma is the ideal
showpiece to spot potential talents of
athletes and others as every state parade
their best to win the medals at stake. Styled like the
Olympic games, Sukma comprises different games
and sports where the participants are those who
have not yet reached the top level in their respective
events. Up and coming young talents compete
against each other while those who have attained
world and regional rankings are usually not allowed
to take part.
Sarawak stands shoulder to shoulder with the
major sporting states in many events at Sukma, an
annual affair in Malaysia. In fact, in various sporting
events Sarawak are the leaders like Wushu, Ten-pin
bowling, Swimming, Track and Field events as well
as Taekwondo, Women’s Hockey to name a few. For
2012, Sukma will be held in Pahang, from 7 th to 16 th
July where 24 different sports will be competed in.
For Sarawak, she will only be competing in 22 sports
as she will not be taking part in equestrian and
sailing events.
SUKMA XV
7 th – 16 th July 2012
Sarawak hopes to finish
among top three in this annual
competition
Two of Sarawak’s brightest stars are swimmers
Erika Kong and Hii Siew Siew who are projected
to win at least some gold in their pet events. Their
friends in ten-pin bowling too are expected to rake
in a few gold medals based on their performances
to date in various competitions. Wushu athletes
are also keeping their fingers crossed as they have
been getting good results in a number of regional
competitions, which should give them the edge
when competing in the games. The track and field
coaches have quietly predicted that their chargers
will also return with gold medals in some events
based on their current performances at meets but
would not want to speculate much!
Sukma game hosting is on a rotational basis and
though Pahang is quite a distant away for many
Sarawak parents, they nevertheless can still follow
their children as the games are usually carried out
live on TV. Watch out for these games during the
month of July as they are always full of drama,
spirit and cheering for teammates during the
competitions!
