It’s back, bigger and better<br />

this year! The Borneo<br />

International Kite Festival in<br />

Bintulu, Sarawak will once again be<br />

showcasing kites of all sizes, colours<br />

and shapes this coming 26 th – 30 th<br />

September 2012. Flying majesti<strong>call</strong>y,<br />

gracefully or mysteriously, these<br />

amazing art pieces are a marvel when<br />

in the air, ever so charming and always<br />

a thrill <strong>to</strong> try your hands on. Yes,<br />

enthusiasts and kite experts will offer<br />

specta<strong>to</strong>rs the opportunity <strong>to</strong> fly their<br />

kites as well as giving instructions and<br />

tips on handling them.<br />

To experience these thrilling sessions,<br />

just drop by the old Bintulu airport<br />

which is right in the middle of the<br />

fast developing <strong>to</strong>wn during the last<br />

weekend of September for a chance <strong>to</strong><br />

really get a feel of these kites. From the<br />

ever graceful Malaysian Waus <strong>to</strong> the<br />

multi-sections butterflies and on <strong>to</strong> the<br />

stunt kites, the <strong>to</strong>uch and feel of these<br />

kites are completely as<strong>to</strong>unding and<br />

challenging <strong>to</strong> those new <strong>to</strong> the sport.<br />

In the hands of these professional kite<br />

handlers, it seems the kites can do<br />

almost every thing, turning, dropping<br />

straight down, shooting right up or<br />

dance in the air! If standing under the<br />

sunny sky is not your thing, just stand<br />

in the shades and enjoy the spectacle<br />

of these flying beauties.<br />

When the show is over, you can<br />

always pick your way <strong>to</strong> the various<br />

kite workshops for a detailed<br />

understanding of how these kites<br />

work and how they are made or<br />

assembled. Wau kites workshops<br />

will be held while stunt kites clinic<br />

should prove interesting. A large<br />

number of specta<strong>to</strong>rs also buy<br />

souvenir kites <strong>to</strong> decorate their<br />

<strong>home</strong>s and <strong>to</strong> tell wonderful s<strong>to</strong>ries<br />

of these kites during visits by friends<br />

and relatives. In some <strong>home</strong>s, these<br />

kites, strategi<strong>call</strong>y <strong>place</strong>d on the<br />

ceilings are the envy of many and<br />

especially so when flying in the<br />

neighbourhoods on fine sunny days!<br />

Children are also entertained <strong>to</strong><br />

various events like drawing and<br />

colouring competitions during the<br />

festival days. There are also songs<br />

and dance sessions, sampling<br />

of different types of food and<br />

opportunity <strong>to</strong> visit the Bintulu Trade<br />

and Food Fair which will be held<br />

concurrently during the weekend<br />

where cultural performances provide<br />

nightly entertainments. Certainly the<br />

Borneo International Kite Festival is<br />

an opportunity <strong>to</strong> really enjoy<br />

the sights, sounds and food of<br />

the people here as well as<br />

learning about a hobby<br />
