Kite Festival in
Bintulu Sarawak is
now bigger, better!
The

flights
It’s back, bigger and better
this year! The Borneo
International Kite Festival in
Bintulu, Sarawak will once again be
showcasing kites of all sizes, colours
and shapes this coming 26 th – 30 th
September 2012. Flying majestically,
gracefully or mysteriously, these
amazing art pieces are a marvel when
in the air, ever so charming and always
a thrill to try your hands on. Yes,
enthusiasts and kite experts will offer
spectators the opportunity to fly their
kites as well as giving instructions and
tips on handling them.
To experience these thrilling sessions,
just drop by the old Bintulu airport
which is right in the middle of the
fast developing town during the last
weekend of September for a chance to
really get a feel of these kites. From the
ever graceful Malaysian Waus to the
multi-sections butterflies and on to the
stunt kites, the touch and feel of these
kites are completely astounding and
challenging to those new to the sport.
In the hands of these professional kite
handlers, it seems the kites can do
almost every thing, turning, dropping
straight down, shooting right up or
dance in the air! If standing under the
sunny sky is not your thing, just stand
in the shades and enjoy the spectacle
of these flying beauties.
When the show is over, you can
always pick your way to the various
kite workshops for a detailed
understanding of how these kites
work and how they are made or
assembled. Wau kites workshops
will be held while stunt kites clinic
should prove interesting. A large
number of spectators also buy
souvenir kites to decorate their
homes and to tell wonderful stories
of these kites during visits by friends
and relatives. In some homes, these
kites, strategically placed on the
ceilings are the envy of many and
especially so when flying in the
neighbourhoods on fine sunny days!
Children are also entertained to
various events like drawing and
colouring competitions during the
festival days. There are also songs
and dance sessions, sampling
of different types of food and
opportunity to visit the Bintulu Trade
and Food Fair which will be held
concurrently during the weekend
where cultural performances provide
nightly entertainments. Certainly the
Borneo International Kite Festival is
an opportunity to really enjoy
the sights, sounds and food of
the people here as well as
learning about a hobby
that really flies!
