Soul City Community based Tagang System of management of rivers have proven successful in Sarawak Fish for life An old and wise quote stated that if you give a man a fish you can only feed him for a day but if you teach him how to fish, he will be able to feed himself and his family for a long time. This proverb is one of the main objectives of the Sarawak Agriculture Department in trying to conserve the rivers, fishes and provide riverine inhabitants a source of food as well as income under the Tagang System, a brainchild of Yang Berhormat Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr.) Alfred Jabu Numpang, Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Modernisation of Agriculture and Minister of Rural Development, Sarawak. Launched in 2005 based closely on a similar system being practiced in neighbouring Sabah, the system is adaptable to include conservation of fish species, stock enhancement, R&D as well as aquaculture development in rural areas. 52 areas in Sarawak, covering the divisions of Kuching, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Mukah, Kapit, Bintulu, Miri and Limbang. Based on the data collected in Sarawak, some 19 species of fish and other edible aquatic species have been recorded in the samples and all results have pointed to a promising future for the Tagang System here.
