Kuching City’s Sunday Market
along Jalan Satok is the
most well known centre
for city folks and tourists alike when
it comes to local food and fruits.
Every weekend the whole area is
like a carnival for sellers and buyers,
especially with the presence of native
groups selling their farm produce,
wholesellers with their locally grown
vegetables and assortment of wet
and dry foodstuff, gardening and
hobbyist vendors. This diversity
of products and services is like a
magnetic pull on everyone, young
and old alike and a real eye opener
for many tourists in the state.

Due to the overwhelming number
of vendors and patrons, the place is
simply inadequate in terms of space to
display goods, limited lanes for patrons
and at times massive traffic jams and
huge amount of litter towards the
evening time. Realizing the limitation
of the venue as well as the potential
of the place to draw in tourists, the
government has set up the Medan
Niaga Satok, which will be located at
Jalan Matang, Petra Jaya, just across
the main bridge from Jalan Satok.
Covering an area of 12.25 acres, this
purpose built market will include
a roof structure for the comfort of
vendors and patrons, separation of
wet and semi-wet sections, food
section, plaza section and office
of FAMA, the federal agricultural
agency which is joint partnership
with the state government in setting
up the new venue. In addition to the
separation of the different segments of
traders, the market will have modern
and efficient waste disposal systems
as well as wide spaces for movement
of traffic, goods and services. The
whole project is estimated to cost
about RM46.5 million which will
include wide-open access roads, ample
parking bays, marina landing spots
and safe environment for everyone.
Apart from the usual shopping,
visitors will be entertained by cultural
performances and activities during the
evenings, which will boost patronage
of the market.
It is estimated that about 1300
vendors are currently frequenting
the Sunday Market, a figure that
will likely increase at the new venue
as more entrepreneurs join in.
With the better facilities becoming
available at the new market, which
will open its doors to the public
come July 2012, you can expect
Medan Niaga Satok to be even
more busy with people looking for
interesting, exotic range of goods
and services. The new landmark for
the city will see traders moving into
the market in stages.
