Soul City Services to all In almost every country the cost of medical and health care is rising steadily and many marginalized people living in cities are finding it more difficult to seek treatment due to the cost factor. Recently Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak launched the 1 Malaysia Clinic to specifically bring medical care to everyone by establishing 50 such clinics in cities and towns throughout the nation. Easily accessible and open everyday (10:00am to 10:00pm), these clinics are there to provide basic checks and simple medications to those in need at the cost of RM1! “The clinics are not meant to replace the hospitals or private clinics but to give everyone the opportunity to seek medical care when necessary. Services like checks of blood pressure, diabetes testing and hypertension are available but more detail checks on other illness have still to be referred to the hospitals,” said the Prime Minister at the launching. “Foremost, these clinics are not to compete with the private sector clinics and so should be seen as a win-win situation as those that need referrals are still directed to such clinics. More importantly, these are services provided by the government to everyone at affordable price and can decrease the queues in hospitals for those seeking such treatments or services.” Other services available include cough medications, high fever treatments and simple stitches for minor cuts. According to the Prime Minister, if the idea of such clinics are readily acceptable to the public, there are possibilities that their number could be increased, based on areas where the demand is highest. Interestingly, the RM10 million budget for these fifty clinics are to provide equipment and medicines and are not inclusive of the buildings’ cost. Another plus point for these clinics is that services can be provided at a fast pace as they provide services that are not time consuming. “These clinics are specifically aimed at those who are at the lowest income group in the cities and towns, to provide health and medical care to everyone, including foreigners,” added Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, Malaysia’s Minister of Health at the launching. Soul City Malaysia Clinics that foreigners seeking services at these clinics will have to pay RM15 and are welcomed too, especially those in service industries in the cities and towns. The Minister also pointed out that he had consulted with the Malaysian Medical Association on the merits of these clinics and to ally their fear that private enterprises will not be affected by the opening of these clinics. “We want to make it clear to everyone concerned that these clinics are another step in our effort to provide quality health and medical care to the people in a fair and transparent way,” he added. There are no distinctions between anyone going to these clinics, which is the government’s way of providing services to all, he stated.
