Karoliina Vesa is a contemporary music specialist and producer with the Finnish
Broadcasting Company (YLE). She studied musicology at the University of Helsinki and
gratuated in 2005. Since then, Ms. Vesa has worked as a journalist and music producer at
Finnish Broadcasting Company. During the past years she has also taught music journalism at
the Universities of Helsinki and Turku, Finland.
Torun Kirby Torbo is trained from the Norwegian Academy of Music, the Royal Conservatory
in the Hague, and the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels, as a classical flautist and
historical traverso player, but has since 2008 been working mainly as a music journalist for the
Norwegian Radio. She has played a big part in developing new formats for radio, making
classical music, jazz and folk music accessible to a wider audience.
Her main focus is on image-generating storytelling in radio work. She is eager to try out new
techniques of editing and production, incorporating new ways of applying music, and musical
ways of arranging non-musical material. International sources of inspiration are NPR's
Radiolab, as well as This American Life.
In 2009 she was shortlisted in the competition for the half hour show on classical music "Kort
og klassisk", and in 2011 she won the Prix Italia in the category of Work on Music, for the 20
minute documentary “A Flute in the Ice.”

Piotr Matwiejczuk, musicologist, violinist, journalist, radio presenter, music critic. Completed a
MA in Musicology at the University of Warsaw. From 1992 to 2001 he collaborated with Polish
Regional Radio Station in Olsztyn; he presented there hundreds of programmes featuring
classical music and American folk music. From 2002 he has been a journalist of Polish Radio
2 Music Department. He has presented music programmes, feature programmes, concert
transmissions, has hosted various radio talk-shows. He created three cycles of radio
programmes (over 40 programmes altogether) on the history of former East Prussia,
broadcasted by Polish Radio 2 in 2005, 2006 and 2008: The Lost World – the Palaces of
Former East Prussia, On The Path of Knight Monks – The Castles of Teutonic Knights in Old
Prussia and The Map of Places Lost and Found. He collaborated with Polish Radio Theatre on
several radio dramas. Working for Polish Radio, he has interviewed numerous notable
musicians such as Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Nelson Goerner, Philippe Herreweghe, Philippe
Jarrousky, Gustav Leonhardt, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Maria João Pires, Jonathan Plowright,
Christina Pluhar, Jordi Savall, Andreas Scholl, Andreas Staier, Maxim Vengerov. In 2006 Piotr
Matwiejczuk was awarded by the Board of Polish Radio and the Board of Polish Writers’
Union, Warsaw Branch, Witold Hulewicz Prize for notable achievements in the field of radio
broadcasting. He also collaborated with the Literary Departament of the Polish National Opera,
editing several programme books, including programme books accompanying the plays by
directors such as Mariusz Treliñski and Keith Warner. Since March 2012 has been editor-inchief
of Muzyka w Mieœcie (MWM) musical magazine, edited by Wroc³aw Philharmonic. He

has published many reviews and essays on music in numerous Polish cultural magazines,
such as: Tygodnik Powszechny, Ruch Muzyczny, Gazeta Wyborcza, Czas Kultury, Ethos and
in the online culture portal dwutygodnik.com.
Gail Henry Gail Henry, B.Mus. (Hons), M.A. Music Education, is an award winning Radio
Producer with RTÉ lyric fm having recently been awarded a Silver Medal at the New York
Festivals 2012 for ‘Piano Keys’ a series of educational podcasts. Gail is head of the Music
Team at RTÉ lyric fm and produces Niall Carroll’s Classical Daytime on RTÉ lyric fm 10-2pm,
Monday-Friday. Gail has collaborated on productions with NPR and BBC and is a member of
the EBU Children’s Programming Group. A selection of Gail’s feature/ documentary works
include Canteloube’s ‘Songs of the Auvergne’, ‘Leaving on a high note’ Richard Strauss’ Four
last Songs and ‘Let the music Sing’ the teaching legacy of Sir James Galway amongst others.
As an education specialist Gail devised and developed the RTÉ lyric fm educational and
outreach programme which brings music and educational radio to schools and communities
around Ireland with the aim of stimulating and encouraging audiences of the future! A choral
conductor herself Gail set up the annual Choirs for Christmas Competition on RTÉ lyric fm
which shares the work of hundreds of amateur Irish Choirs with the national audience
annually. Aside from making radio Gail plays flute and piano and is a doctoral candidate at
the University of Limerick.
Diana Berlin has been working at the radio since 1970. She is the member of the Union of
Journalists of the Russian Federation. Member of the International TV and Radio Academy.
Honored Worker of Culture of the Russian Federation. The owner of the National Prizes in the
field of radio broadcasting. Author and host of numerous radio and TV programs. Chief
Counselor to the Chairman.
Paolo Cairoli. Pianist, musicologist, and journalist, Paolo Cairoli graduated with honours at
Turin’s Conservatoire “G. Verdi”, winning first prize as best graduate of the year. He later
perfected his technique under Massimiliano Damerini. He attended Orchestra Conducting
classes at the École Normale de Musique “A. Cortot” in Paris and graduated as Opera
Conductor at Bologna’s Regia Accademia Filarmonica. He has performed as pianist in Italy
playing at Venice’s Palazzo Labia, Turin’s Circolo degli Artisti, Reggia di Venaria Reale, and
Castagneto Carducci’s Theatre. He has conducted Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’amore at Teatro
Mancinelli in Orvieto.
He graduated in Italian Literature and Philosophy, and DAMS, at Turin’s University. He has
published a paper on composer Giorgio Ferrari and various essays of musicological nature;
among them a research on the influence of music on Amelia Rosselli’s poetry, presented in
Siena (Accademia dei Rozzi) and in Florence (Circolo Rosselli).
He is presently communication manager for the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della Rai and
head of the press office for cultural TV channel Rai5. He is co-author of TV program
“Petruška”, dedicated to classical music.
Luigi Picardi. Born in Rome in 1970, Luigi Picardi began guitar studies at the age of 14 and
earned his diploma ‘summa cum laude’ at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory of Rome under the
tutelage of Maestro Carlo Carfagna. Soon afterwards he enrolled in numerous seminars and

master classes in Italy and Spain conducted by internationally famous musicians, winning
various national and International competitions.
At the end of 1999 he began his collaboration with the staff of Vatican Radio’s “Studio A” and
“Programmi Musicali”. As a programmer, he is responsable for “Con voi nella notte”, an
historical, Vatican Radio night time broadcast.
He also wrote and conducted the programmes: “Sei corde per mille suoni”, “L’Arte di
Arrangiare”, “Andrea Luchesi: tra Venezia e Wiener-Klassik”, “Mario Gangi–Carlo Carfagna:
La scuola romana di Santa Cecilia”, “Il fascino dell’intepretazione” and “L’Arpeggio”.
As a musical assistant he takes part in many musical events for the Holy See at the Paul VI
Audience Hall, Castel Gandolfo, Saint Paul’s Basilica, etc.
Parallelly, he is engaged in activities as a sound technician, actively collaborating in the dual
role of technician and musical assistant for discographic productions at events including the
“Festival di Pasqua” (1999), “Festival Internazionale Pietre che cantano” from 2003 to 2005,
“Festival Pontino” (2005). He has also been involved in recording and editing various CDs
among which those of the Orchestra da Camera della Campania, conducted by Luigi Piovano
(1st violoncellist of the Orchestra Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and 1st violoncello guest soloist
of the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra).
Over the years he has performed at various concerts both as a soloist and within various
camera ensembles, and in 2000 formed the Duo Beltane with flautist Claudia Mejía.
In 2007 he received a degree ‘magna cum laude’ in Music History from the University “La
Sapienza” of Rome, under the tutelage of Professor Franco Piperno with a dissertation on the
controversial Italian composer Andrea Luchesi. Since then he has been invited to speak at
conferences about the topic, by Paolo Travagnin for the television programme “Iceberg News”
(2007) and by Luigi Piovano for the “Festival Internazionale di Pompei” (2008).
He also actively collaborates with the Istituto Bibliografico Musicale directed by the renowned
musicologist Giancarlo Rostirolla at the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale of Rome.
