Economic Earthen Kitchen (EEK) has been disseminated to all the project villages and by January 2005 almost 75% of the household in the project villages has adopted it. This EEK is a simple, cost free, mud structure devised to reduce the consumption of fuel, thereby conserving the forest. Reduction in consumption of firewood has saved thousands of trees and several rupees each year. It is observed that before the use of EEK, the consumption of firewood in each house at an average was 5 thaks. After the use of EEK the firewood consumption has been reduced to 3 thaks. It is estimated that about 3.6 lakh worth of firewood is saved every year in a village. This amounts to Rs. 57.60 lakh saved in all the 16 villages in a year and Rs` 3.45 crores worth of firewood has been saved during six years in the project villages. Photo 2.
