Southern <strong>and</strong> Central<br />
Sights<br />
In the south, San Fern<strong>and</strong>o Hill <strong>of</strong>fers<br />
a picturesque nature trail <strong>and</strong> fabulous<br />
lookout over the heart <strong>of</strong> the city.<br />
Devil’s Woodyard, where the mud<br />
volcanoes belch out thick, chocolaty mud,<br />
is a delight for the kids to witness.<br />
The Pitch Lake is a gift <strong>of</strong> nature <strong>and</strong><br />
a national treasure, providing the entire<br />
country, <strong>and</strong> many <strong>of</strong> the neighbouring<br />
isl<strong>and</strong>s, with pitch for building roads. The<br />
ride along the road is like a roller coaster<br />
from the melting pitch underground, <strong>and</strong><br />
the sulphur lakes are well known for their<br />

In central <strong>Trinidad</strong>, the newly<br />
constructed Hanuman Murti, located<br />
in Carapichaima, is an awesome Hindu<br />
religious site. Lion House, formerly the<br />
home <strong>of</strong> Nobel laureate Sir Vidya Naipaul,<br />
st<strong>and</strong>s alo<strong>of</strong> in Chaguanas.<br />
The Wild Fowl Trust in Pointe-à-Pierre is a<br />
beautiful nature park with tours <strong>and</strong> nature<br />
trails. At the Trust, you can view the beautiful<br />
waterfowls <strong>of</strong> <strong>Trinidad</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Tobago</strong>, <strong>and</strong><br />
lakes that house a wildlife reserve, which<br />
has been in existence for over thirty years;<br />
unique to the Caribbean region. Contact<br />

La Vega Estate, located in Gran Couva,<br />
from its humble beginnings as a cocoa<br />
estate, has grown <strong>and</strong> blossomed into a<br />
thriving nursery <strong>and</strong> garden centre with<br />
outlets in north <strong>and</strong> south <strong>Trinidad</strong>. La<br />
Vega has opened its gates to the public<br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers fun for the entire family. La<br />
Vega is also home to a shrine dedicated<br />
to the Divine Mercy <strong>of</strong> Jesus. For further<br />

Western Sights<br />
Chaguaramas Base <strong>and</strong> the<br />
Chaguaramas Military & Aerospace<br />
Museum houses interesting historical<br />
artifacts <strong>of</strong> wartime. On the compound<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Museum are four consecrated<br />
Memorials alongside military vehicles,<br />
vessels, artillery <strong>and</strong> aircraft. The indoor<br />
museum is 12,000 square feet in area,<br />
covering over 500 years <strong>of</strong> history.<br />
Located in the Bocas del Dragón or<br />
Dragon’s Mouth are the five isl<strong>and</strong>s referred<br />
to as “Down the isl<strong>and</strong>s”: Chacachacare,<br />
Huevos, Gasparillo (or Centipede Isl<strong>and</strong>),<br />
Monos <strong>and</strong> Gaspar Gr<strong>and</strong>e (or Gasparee).<br />
Many locals have holiday homes on Monos<br />
<strong>and</strong> Gasparee, within easy access by boat<br />
from Chaguaramas. Scotl<strong>and</strong> Bay is also<br />
very popular with locals on weekends.<br />
