he town <strong>of</strong> Roxborough, which<br />
takes its name from a former estate<br />
<strong>of</strong> that name, is situated on the<br />
narrow <strong>and</strong> winding road that runs<br />
northeasterly from Scarborough to Speyside.<br />
Lying seventeen miles from Scarborough, it<br />
is at the northern end <strong>of</strong> the vast Carapuse<br />
Bay <strong>and</strong> is the gateway to <strong>Tobago</strong>’s wild <strong>and</strong><br />
forested nature reserves, chief among which<br />
is Speyside, with the <strong>of</strong>fshore isl<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> Little<br />
<strong>Tobago</strong>, home <strong>of</strong> the Bird <strong>of</strong> Paradise.<br />
In 1772, the Roxborough Estate was owned in<br />
partnership, among others, by Archibald Stuart<br />
<strong>and</strong> a young Scotsman from Kirkcudbrightshire<br />
on the Solway Firth, by the name <strong>of</strong> John Paul<br />
who was born on July 6, 1747 <strong>and</strong> was the fourth<br />
child <strong>of</strong> seven born to John <strong>and</strong> Jean Paul.<br />
