San Diego Woodturners Page 4 March 2011 Michael Mocho - Coming In April This presentation will cover a variety of design strategies and techniques for creating and altering box and vessel forms. He will illustrate how tool and material selection, sharpening, RPM, and stance at the lathe all effect the nuances of final form and surface quality. Michael will also demonstrate a variety of on-lathe textural techniques including chatter-work, indexed embossing, radial fluting, and spiral work using the versatileand often tricky- Sorby spiral and texturing tool. Plenty of useful information will be provided on the finer points of lathe set-up and adjustment, sharpening strategies, and simple jigs and tool modifications- which will add new creative possibilities to your work. Fast and effective methods for cutting clean box interiors will also be demonstrated, as well as simple tips for making accurate connections between parts such as lids, finials, knobs, spires, inlays, feet, and other appendages. He will also illustrate the creative possibilities of innovative free-hand abrasive shaping techniques- both on and off the lathe- by using particular cross-section turnings as a starting point. This demo will change the way you look at your turned forms and will inspire new explorations. The hands-on workshop will address as many of the topics that can be fit into the available time. There will be plenty of one-on-one instruction, and students are encouraged to bring their own tools to try a variety of small projects designed to help develop tool handling skills, a greater understanding of wood, cutting dynamics, sharpening, and the design possibilities that these techniques can add to your work. www.mmocho.com
San Diego Woodturners Page 5 March 2011 At our Febuary meeting the San Diego Woodturners honored Dan Leaf with a lifetime membership. Dan has been turning since he was in high school at Hilltop High. He was very interested in segmented pieces. Dan made several trips to Arizona to meet with Ray Allen. In 2005 he built his own very large lathe. He built a hollowform with 3315 pieces that is approximately 45 inches tall and 34 inches in diameter. He entered it in the 2006 San Diego County Fair Design in Wood where it took the Masters Award. It is a beautiful piece and he titled it “For Ray”. For several years his family graciously allowed the San Diego Woodturners to store wood at their business in Chula Vista. Dan is very resourceful and creative. He has designed and built stands to make wheel chair accessable lathes for our Turn Around for Vets program. Our mini symposium has been lucky enough to have him teach tool making classes. He has donated endless Dan Leaf Honored amounts of material and his time. Thank You Dan! Also Thank You to Alex for the wonderful cupcakes. They were yummy and eaten very quickly. SAN DIEGO FAIR 2011 Yes it’s that time of year again. The San Diego fair will start June 10 th through July 4 th so it’s time to turn out your best. Check your calendar and help us out by signing up. You do not have to be a good turner. We will have someone there to get you started with a lesson or two. We like to have a minimum of two people in the morning and two in the afternoon. If you are still a full time worker we need help on the weekends. Your reward for helping are two tickets for each shift.
