As shown in Figure 15, the average reaction time was usually less than 40 ms.<br />

The largest deviation was about 90 ms. The mean <strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ard deviations for<br />

each operator were computed <strong>and</strong> graphed in Figure 16. The data demonstrates<br />

that the worst case mean reaction time was 27 ms, <strong>and</strong> the worst case st<strong>and</strong>ard<br />

deviation was 10 ms, which is a significant improvement over the direct<br />

comparison method. Subsequent measurements <strong>of</strong> human reaction time were<br />

made by placing the start/stop button <strong>of</strong> the stopwatch directly against the start/<br />

stop button <strong>of</strong> the frequency counter (as shown in Figure 12) so that both buttons<br />

were pushed at the same time. The experimental data showed that this method<br />

provided no significant advantage over using one h<strong>and</strong> to start the stopwatch <strong>and</strong><br />

the other h<strong>and</strong> to start the frequency counter.<br />
