Principito (Malaga), Gran Meliá Bahía del
Respecting the Environment:
a commitment to Sustainable
Tourism
Always conscious of the importance of environmental
respect and conservation, Sol Meliá
was the first Spanish company to create its
own Corporate Environmental Protection
Manual back in 1995. The insistence of the
company’s senior management has been a decisive
factor in making the environment a priority
concern in all company activities and in
introducing the concept of sustainable development
in the company’s strategic planning
processes.
“Increasing environmental
sensitivity
bring a need to define
and document in a
written Manual our
company policies. Sol
Meliá believes in an
equation that says
Better environment
+ Better product +
Better Service =
Better quality.
Training our staff
and improving the
information we
provide to our guests
is the road we have
to follow to ensure we
achieve our environmental
plans and
that our achievements
are rewarded.”
Apart from creating its own internal
Environmental Management Systems, Sol
Meliá has also taken part in a large number of
initiatives organised by private and public
bodies aiming to continue to make progress in
the application of its environmental protection
policies. Company representatives have taken
part in the AENOR Work Group designing
regulations to adapt ISO 14001 to the hotel
sector, which a large number of hotels have
also signed up with the Environmental
Foundation.
The Environmental Department organises and
manages hotel staff attendance on courses and
seminars on environmental policy and offers
consultancy services for hotels. Sol Meliá also
provides internal assessment services on environmental
legislation for certified hotels and
works together with hotels to constantly update
procedures manuals to ensure continued
compliance with environmental protection
guidelines.
