“The agreement
between Sol Meliá
and Tryp creates a
giant hotel company
with Spanish
majority capital
and also unites two
complementary
strategies to take on
new projects that
will allow us to
continue our ascent
in the world
ranking”
”
Sebastián Escarrer,
Vice Chairman
Entering the “Top Ten”:
The integration of Tryp Hotels
Sol Meliá growth policy in 2000 was somewhat
marked by an event of tremendous importance
for the future: the purchase of the Tryp
Hotels chain. The deal was sealed on the 21st.
August 2000 and brought with it the extension
of the company’s leadership position in the
Spanish city and resort hotel markets, the consolidation
of its second position in the
European ranking and a position as the leading
hotel company in such important leisure tourism
destinations as Cuba and Tunisia. Above
all, however, this giant leap forward brought
about the entry of Sol Meliá in the world top
ten, the ranking of the 10 largest hotel companies
in the world.
Commercial and strategic reasons abound for
the purchase of Tryp: the size of the company,
relatively easy to digest but, at the same time,
