THE APPLICATION OF NEXT GENERATION
SEQUENCING (NGS) IN GENOME STUDIES
BY: MR. SHI QUAN LI (BEIJING GENOMICS INSTITUTE, ASIA-PACIFIC)
DATE: 21 NOVEMBER 2012 (WED)
TIME: 2:45 PM– 4:00 PM
VENUE: INBIOSIS SEMINAR HALL, UKM BANGI
INTRODUCTION
Next-generation sequencing (NGS) has
revolutionized plant and animal research, allowing
us to decode the whole genomes of many species.
NGS also enables us to detect functional genes and
markers of important traits to facilitate molecular
breeding and improve agriculture production and
conservation. BGI have been a pioneer in this field
and is highly experienced in applying NGS to the
study of plant and animal genomes, with state-ofthe-art
technologies and computing power, rapid
turn-around time, as well as strong bioinformatics
know-how.
Today, as hundreds, perhaps thousands, of human
genomes are being sequenced, reference genomes
are also being pursued for numerous other
creatures with whom we share the planet.
Sequencing of whole genomes, as well as the
whole transcriptome, whole methylome study
provides us with a new way to see life and, through
comparisons between and amongst species.
