Advanced Network Distribution Solution for Jeddah
Description of the project & Results
Conclusions
06/03/2012 > SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT - 2

Introduction
National Water Company awarded in 2008 a
Management Contract to a JV formed by
Acwa Power & Suez Environment
establishing the Jeddah City Business Unit to
provide water and waste water services for
the 3,5 M of inhabitants of Jeddah.
JCBU operates a network of 5,500 km of
network for water and 1,400 km for waste
water.
30/03/2011 06/03/2012 > SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT - 3

Context of Jeddah
Operational & Infrastructure
• Water supply of 650 000 m3/day (65 %
through the network and 35 % by water
tankers)
• 5.500 km of network (80 % in plastic
pipes), only 5% with an average pressure
of 0.5 Bars
• Lack of sectorization and operational data
like flow measurement, pressure,
hydraulic behavior,
Internal Processes & Communication
• Absences of reliable Call Center and
Operation Center.
• No communication between Operational
and Customer Services Departments.
• No process, resources or systems to
follow up leak detection and repairs
activities.
06/03/2012 > SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT - 4

Context of Jeddah
• Supply frequency : 23 days
• Poor quality of service
•35% water supply by water tanks
•Growing population & rapid economic development
•Lack of natural resources and high water production cost = desalination
• Insufficient and poorly-maintained infrastructure (~ 40% water losses,
2/3 population not connected to sewers)
• Weak organization and public discontentment
Advanced Network Distribution
Solution for Jeddah
Creation and Implementation of 51 Distribution Zones
• To manage the evolution from rationing to continuous supply
• To operate the network through an advanced system with
pressure control and flow measurement linked to the SCADA
• Water balance assessment and NRW actions by priorities
06/03/2012 > SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT - 8

OCC Implementation & SCADA
Implementation of the Operation
Control Center (OCC)
• using SCADA and LTDB
• 240 pressure transmission points
• 75 flow measurement points
Development and implementation
of an innovative tool for rationing
improvement (awarded with an SE
innovation trophies)
Pressure Management
• The average flow reduction by DZ is estimated in 2000
Advanced Network Distribution Solution implemented in Jeddah,
Quickly identification of the problems and tailored solution
decided and implemented
OCC & SCADA with the measurement network gives enough
elements to start the DZ project
Implementation of DZ on going, 8 finalized by the end of 2011
& 28 by 2012
Quickly improvement on the Operation of the rationing after
the identification of the DZ
Pressure reduction allow to save around 10 to 15% of the
daily water supply (1Mm3/day > 100 000 m3/day available
fro other customers)
Pressure management shows further reduction of 14 to 20 %
on the daily water supply to the zones.
