STUDY ABROAD
Study abroad represents a significant
enhancement to your engineering education.
Students engaged in international
study discover insights into other cultures,
develop new perspectives, and
learn to reflect on how their own culture
has shaped their understanding of the
world.
With proper planning, SEAS undergraduate
students can study abroad.
Most do so in the spring semester of
their sophomore year or in their junior
year. In general, students take technical
and nontechnical electives while abroad,
although completing required courses is
possible in some circumstances. It is
essential that students beginning planning
during their first year by meeting
with Scott Carpenter, assistant dean of
academic affairs and study abroad, in
105 Carman (sc2764@columbia.edu).
Dean Carpenter helps students clarify
their goals for international study, make
the right preparations for their program,
and integrate their study-abroad courses
into the Columbia curriculum.
Students also gain approval from their
departmental advisers to ensure that
their work abroad meets the requirements
of their majors.
Eligibility Requirements
In order to participate in a semester- or
year-long study abroad program, students
must:
• have at least a 3.0 GPA
• be making good progress toward finishing
the Core Curriculum
• have at least intermediate proficiency
level or higher in the local language, if
it is not English
