XIII Regional Meeting SBQ-Rio<br />
With the theme “Challenges in Chemistry at the ‘Golden Age’ of Rio de Janeiro”, the XII Regional<br />
Meeting of the Brazilian Chemistry Society – Rio de Janeiro (SBQ-Rio), conducted from July 4 to 7,<br />
<strong>2011</strong>, at the Military Institute of Engineering (IME), also had <strong>INCT</strong>-INOFAR researchers among its<br />
speakers. As well as taking part in the event, the Institute researchers were also awarded by SBQ-Rio.<br />
Walter Baptist Mors Medal<br />
The Walter Baptist Mors medal, created in honor of the renowned Brazilian chemist who was a pioneer of<br />
natural products Chemistry, was awarded to the researchers who made the biggest impact in Chemistry<br />
in 2010. Prof. Eliezer J. Barreiro, <strong>INCT</strong>-INOFAR coordinator, Prof. Angelo da Cunha Pinto, member<br />
of the Managing and Follow-Up Committee (CGA), Prof. Vitor Francisco Ferreira, scientific consultant<br />
for the Institute, and Prof. Francisco Radler de Aquino Neto, <strong>INCT</strong>-INOFAR <strong>UFRJ</strong> associate researcher,<br />
were awarded with the medal by SBQ-Rio.<br />
Round Tables<br />
On the XIII Regional Meeting of SBQ-Rio, Prof. Eliezer J. Barreiro led the table “Challenges of the<br />
Pharmaceutical Industry in Brazil” which had the presence of Dr. Nubia Boechat, Farmanguinhos<br />
researcher, and of Tatiana Donato, Servier Laboratories project manager. In their presentations, the<br />
presenters talked about issues such as the generics market and the differences between the public and<br />
private sector markets in medications.<br />
The round table on perspectives for undergraduate and graduate schools in Chemistry in the state of Rio<br />
de Janeiro had the presence of Prof. Luiz Carlos Dias, <strong>INCT</strong>-INOFAR CGA member. The professor,<br />
who is CAPES Chemistry coordinator, defended that it is necessary to advance in the consolidation of<br />
graduate schools in the North, Northeast, and Midwest regions, as well as strengthening undergraduate<br />
courses in those areas. To him, it is necessary to correct the imbalances, providing extra support to these<br />
regions, and encouraging cooperative research done through networks.
