Events<br />
Member of the <strong>INCT</strong>-INOFAR Managing Committee, Prof. Vanderlan da Silva Bolzani, of the Institute<br />
of Chemistry of UNESP-Araraquara – who made her name in the history of Brazilian Chemistry by being,<br />
in 2008, the first woman to be elected president of the SBQ – was chosen to give the commencement<br />
conference for the event. As an acknowledgement of her scientific trajectory in Chemistry, the professor<br />
was also honored at the 34 th RASBQ with the Simao Mathias Medal.<br />
“History of the Discovery of Pharmaceuticals” was the theme of the mini-course presented by Prof.<br />
Carlos Alberto Manssour Fraga, <strong>INCT</strong>-INOFAR associate researcher connected to the Evaluation and<br />
Synthesis of Bioactive Substances Laboratory (LASSBio®) of <strong>UFRJ</strong>. Aside from presenting an overview<br />
of the chronology of strategies for planning and structurally optimizing prototypes, Manssour presented<br />
the history of the discovery of antibacterial pharmaceuticals like penicillin and sulfas and of innovative<br />
pharmaceuticals, like sildenafil and imatinib.<br />
Chaired by Prof. Eliezer J. Barreiro (<strong>UFRJ</strong>), <strong>INCT</strong>-INOFAR coordinator, the theme session<br />
“Pharmaceuticals and Medications” was planned to talk about fundamental concepts of Medicinal<br />
Chemistry that have guided pharmaceutical research in the 20 th century and the trends for the first<br />
decades of the 21 st century. In its presentation, professor Barreiro presented the Fischer & Ehrlich<br />
paradigm in Modern Medicinal Chemistry.<br />
Lidia Moreira Lima (<strong>UFRJ</strong>), Nelima Romeiro (<strong>UFRJ</strong>-Macae), Heloisa Beraldo (UFMG), Carlos Viegas<br />
(UNIFAL), Fernando Cunha (USP-Ribeirao Preto), and Luiz Carlos Dias (UNICAMP) were some of<br />
the researchers associated with <strong>INCT</strong>-INOFAR that were also present in the 34 th <strong>Annual</strong> Meeting of the<br />
Brazilian Chemistry Society.
