II <strong>2011</strong> Evaluation and Follow-Up Meeting<br />
On November 17 and 18, <strong>INCT</strong>-INOFAR had its II <strong>2011</strong> Evaluation and Follow-<br />
Up Meeting at the Merlin Hotel in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro. Researchers took turns<br />
presenting the Institute’s research subprojects in radical innovation that are the most<br />
advanced. Among them, pharmaceutical candidates for the recovery of myocardial<br />
infarction, new antipsychotic prototypes, substances for the treatment of neuropathic pain,<br />
leishmaniasis and Trypanosoma cruzi antiparasitic drugs, antiasthmatics, and vasodilators<br />
for arterial and pulmonary hypertension.<br />
In the field of incremental innovation, two projects that successfully achieved new synthetic<br />
routes for generic drugs were presented. On this occasion, the trajectories followed to develop<br />
a new synthetic route for atorvastatin, the active principle of the cholesterol reducing drug<br />
Lipitor®, and of Sunitinib, the active principle in the chemotherapeutic drug Sutent®.<br />
For this second meeting, the <strong>INCT</strong>-INOFAR Managing and Follow-Up Committee<br />
(CGA) brought Mercedes Gonzalez and Hugo Cerecetto, Uruguayan experts in Medicinal<br />
Chemistry and professors at the Universidad de la Republica (Udelar) in Montevideo. To<br />
further enhance the team of external consultants employed by the Institute, the event also<br />
had the presence of Andre Tempone, researcher from the Adolfo Lutz Institute, and of<br />
Professor Paulo Ribeiro Costa, from the Natural Products Research Nucleus of <strong>UFRJ</strong>.<br />
