NPQSL: Leading beyond a team within an organisation
The National Professional Qualification for Senior Leadership (NPQSL) is a new
qualification that provides national recognition of your leadership development and
professional achievement as a senior leader.
NPQSL: starting in September 2013
This qualification has a flexible, modular structure that combines essential modules with the freedom to specialise
or develop your own professional areas of interest through the choice of elective modules. You may for example,
want to learn about effective whole school management or develop your skills in building partnerships.
NPQSL is assessed and awarded by the National College, with assessment focusing on tasks linked to school
improvement activities undertaken in the workplace.
Who can apply
Senior leaders with cross-school responsibilities, including experienced middle leaders, deputy heads, special
educational needs co-ordinators (SENCOs) and advanced skills teachers, and other senior staff looking for further
professional development but not aspiring to headship at this stage in their career.
What’s involved
To achieve the qualification, you’ll need to complete two essential modules and two elective modules, with a focus
on driving successful team performance and improving classroom practice.
Each module requires up to 50 hours of blended learning. This typically consists of workplace learning (about
20 hours) and practice activities, 4 face-to-face days at a local venue, including peer and facilitated learning and
reading, reflection, online learning and a final assessment.
