Mattel introduced this line of work trucks in 1970.
They featured futuristic, aerodynamic styling and moving
parts. Most of the models in the Heavyweights series
were based on one of three basic body styles. The
shortest of the three styles was a one-piece body and
cab. The final piece that was snapped in behind the
cab determined the model. These included a truck
bed (Tow Truck), camper shell (Ambulance), cherry
picker (Snorkel), and open trailer (Scooper).
The mid-sized model was similar to the shortest
model as it also had a one-piece body and cab, with
the final snapped-in piece determining the model.
These included a tumbler (Cement Mixer), tilting
dumper (Dump Truck), fuel tank (Fuel Tanker), and container
(Waste Wagon).
The largest model was a two-piece vehicle with a
separate cab and trailer. All of these models were
issued with the same cab, with the trailer determining
the model. These included a hook and ladder (Fire
Engine), an enclosed trailer (Moving Van), flat-bed trailer
(Racer Rig), and camper (Team Trailer), The Racer Rig
had a unique casting for the trailer's chassis. The other
three models' trailers shared the same chassis with the
snap-on attachment determining the style of trailer.
They were issued on special blistercards, which
were similar in design to the original Hot Wheels blister.
The Heavyweights were issued on three different sized
cards, each with a picture of one of the Heavyweights
beneath the familiar Hot Wheels logo. The largest of the
three cards pictured a Fire Engine and was used for the
two-piece cab and trailer models. The mid-sized card
was used for the larger one-piece models and pictured
a Cement Mixer. The smallest of the three cards pictured
the Tow Truck and was used for the smaller onepiece
models.
There was one model in the Heavyweights lineup
that was not based on one of the three basic styles. It
was the S'Cool Bus, issued in 1971. The S'Cool Bus was
based on a Monogram model of the same name created
by Tom Daniel. This model is the most popular and
sought-after casting in the Heavyweights line.
Mattel issued six models in 1970. An additional
seven models were issued in 1971. All six models were
carried over from the previous year for a total of 13
available models in 1971. At the end of 1971, the series
and all 13 castings were discontinued.
Sometimes, the rose color used on the Heavyweights
models is a distinctly different shade. It has a
distinctive pink hue, but it is not pink. Be careful when
purchasing models advertised as hot pink; they are usually
"rose pink."

Mattel's futuristic ambulance featured a
white plastic body with large windows on
both sides and in the back door. The door is a
mini-van style upward-opening door, which
when opened reveals a bed. The sides and
back have a red embossed cross and a transparent
blue light is mounted on top.

This model has a brown or orange plastic
molded truck bed which holds an orange or
yellow plastic spinnable mixing drum, The
mixing drum has a clear plastic label with the
Hot Wheels logo and "CEMENT CO." in black
across its center. The sticker must be present
and properly placed for the model to be

This model features a detachable
cab and trailer which are joined by a
swivel joint. The trailer is detailed with
doors, white painted hoses, etc. molded
in red plastic. It has clear labels on each
side with "FIRE DEPT." and a shield in
white. The passenger side of the trailer
holds a folded black plastic ladder. The rear bumper has
two slots to hold the ladder. Colors listed below identify the
color of the cab. All stickers must be present and properly
placed for the model to be considered mint. If stickers are
missing, deduct 20%.

This model features a detachable cab
and trailer which are joined by a swivel joint.
The trailer was issued in white or gray. Both
trailers feature a gold plastic door that can
be lowered and raised. Each side of the
trailer has a gold label with the Hot Wheels
logo and "VAN LINES" in aqua print. Both
trailers are common and do not affect the value of the item.
Colors listed below identify the cab. All stickers must be present
and properly placed for the model to be considered
mint. If stickers are missing, deduct 20%.
Trailers without running lights and a smooth back door
(gray trailers only) are hard to find. These are believed to be a
very early production run. Add $25.00 if trailer has a smooth
door. Gray trailers do not have painted taillights. The majority
of white trailers have painted red taillights.

This model has a yellow truck bed with
two openings which help secure the metal
tow hooks and a white plastic tow bar. On
each side of the truck bed is a clear plastic
label with the Hot Wheels logo and "TOW
SERVICE" printed in black. All stickers must
be present and properly placed for the
model to be considered mint. If stickers are missing, deduct
20%. If metal tow hook is missing, deduct $15.00.

Fuel Tanker
This model has a white plastic fuel tank on
the trailer with a blue stripe down the center
of the roofline, resembling a walkway. There
are two openings at the rear of the tank that
house two black plastic extendable hoses. On
each side of the fuel tank is a yellow sticker
that has the Hot Wheels logo and "RACING
FUEL" in red. This model was issued only in
white. All stickers must be present and properly placed for the
model to be considered mint. If stickers are missing, deduct
20%.

This model features a detachable cab
and trailer which are joined by a swivel
joint, The trailer is a flat bed design with a
white plastic bed. The bed has tracks
molded into the white plastic with wheel
supports near the front of the trailer that
help hold other Hot Wheels cars in place
on the bed. At the rear of the bed is a
retractable white plastic ramp with similarly molded tracks.
At the front of the trailer is a square tool box with opening
lid. The chassis of this trailer was not shared with any other
Heavyweights models.
The bottom of the trailer is made of unpainted metal
and has a sticker with a blue stripe and the Hot Wheels logo
on each side. All stickers must be present and properly
placed for the model to be considered mint. If stickers are
missing, deduct 20%. Colors listed below identify the color of
the cab.

This is one of several Hot Wheels cars that
Mattel based on Monogram model kits that
were designed by Tom Daniel. This school bus
funny car features a metal chassis and body
that are hinged at the rear, allowing it to be
opened to reveal twin metal engines with a
large orange plastic air scoop, one-piece black
plastic roll cage, and folding body support.
It was issued with black stripe stickers and clear stickers with
"S'COOL BUS" in black for the sides. There were also three stickers
for the hood, a white circle with "S'COOL BUS" in black, and two
rectangular white stickers with "854 C.I." in black. The rectangular
stickers are placed over each fender, and the circular sticker is
placed on the center of the hood near the back. All stickers must
be present and properly placed for the model to be considered
mint. If stickers are missing, deduct 20%. The stickers have been
reproduced by third parties. The original stickers are paper and
will have a dull appearance. The new stickers are vinyl and will
have a glossy shine.

This model has a yellow plastic trailer bed
with notches near the back which hold the
scooper, The scooper is also molded in yellow
plastic and has white plastic arms which
are mounted to the front of the trailer bed
on each side. It can be raised and lowered
to the ground in front of the cab. The scooper
also rotates on its arms so that kids could actually scoop up
dirt and dump it into the trailer bed.

This model is a stylized version of a telephone
or electric company repair truck. It features
a white trailer bed with molded levers and
gauges, and a red plastic extendable arm,
commonly referred to as a "cherry picker." The
extendable arm has a swivel base and is jointed
in three places that allows it to be moved in
a variety of positions. At the end of the arm is an open basket.
In 1971, it appears that some models' chassis were made
with a poor quality metal. As the years have passed, these
defective bases have begun to develop hairline cracks. The
cracks allow the metal to draw moisture and expand, eventually
destroying the base. A surprisingly large number of
Snorkels appear to have been made with this defective
metal. Collectors refer to models with this defect as crumblers.
The deterioration cannot be stopped.
Snorkels with crumbier bases cannot be considered mint,
even if the rest of the model is in perfect shape. The price of
crumbier models depends solely on what a collector is willing
to pay for a model he or she knows will eventually be worthless.
Prices listed below are for models that do not have crum­
bier bases.

This model features a detachable cab
and trailer which are joined by a swivel
joint. The trailer is a white plastic camper
with blue side windows and a light blue
opening door on the passenger side. The
light blue door is actually part of the light
blue plastic molded floor which features a
loft bedroom visible through the side windows
and opened side door. The molded floor also features
a dining area complete with a set table and two benches
which is visible through a large bay window at the rear of
the trailer.
Down the center of the roof of the trailer is a blue
striped sticker with yellow stars. The design is continued with
a smaller sticker on the back of the trailer. On the driver's
side behind the large side window, there is a yellow and
white square sticker with the Hot Wheels logo in red and
"RACING TEAM" in blue. On the passenger side, beneath
the side and back windows is a slender yellow and white
rectangular sticker with a similar design.

Mattel's first sanitation truck features a
yellow plastic trailer bed and container
with a large square opening in the roof
near the front. It has a large black plastic
square dumper at the rear of the truck that
is attached on each side over the rear
wheels. The dumper could be tilted forward
so that kids could toss play "trash" into the container.
There are clear stickers on each side with "DEPT. OF SANI­
TATION" in black. All stickers must be present and properly
placed for the model to be considered mint. If stickers are
missing, deduct 20%.

Each of the two-piece models in the Heavyweights
line came with a separate cab which connected to a
trailer with a swivel joint. The cabs had an opening for the
swivel joint over the back wheels. The trailers' chassis
were designed with a circular cut-out area around the
swivel joint which allowed the cab to turn more than 180
degrees when connected to the trailer. Only one style of
cab was used for all four of the two-piece models (Fire
Engine, Moving Van, Racer Rig, and Team Trailer).
The cabs were issued in a variety of colors, although
some colors were issued only with specific trailers. You
may have to check the descriptions carefully if you find
a mixed collection of trailers and cabs to match the
right color cab with its proper trailer.
The cabs have single-width Redline tires in the front
and a double-width tire in the back. The double-width
tire was used on the back wheels of all the Heavyweights,
except for the S'Cool Bus.
All cabs are marked "The Heavyweights" on the bottom,
but none of the trailers are marked with the series
name. All of the one-piece models in the series are
marked with "The Heavyweights" on the bottom. However,
none of the models' names appear on them.
