His knowledge and motivation 

inspired so many of us, to want 

more, and are requesting some 

hands-on workshops with Tom!

He did “spew copious amounts

our Wounded Warrior Project

magazine article about 

making Ken’s “Haines 

Handle”. Published 

this month in Mark 

Baker’s “Woodturning” magazine the article 

is reprinted beginning on page 8. For those of you who aren’t familiar 

with this magazine it is one of if not the best turning magazine available.

Mike Jackofsky Hollowing Class 

Our latest class has come and gone and it was well attended by 36 very 

interested wood turners. Mike Jackofsky has been turning for around 

12 years now and he specializes in beautiful hollow forms many with a 

natural edge opening. He is one of 

the few turners who take the time to 

sand the inside of the form, knowing 

people like me will have to stick my 

finger inside to see how smooth it is. 

I am seldom disappointed when I do. 

Mike offered to conduct a two-day 

class for whoever was interested in 

learning to turn a hollow form using whatever tools you have available to 

use. I don’t think he realized there would be a landslide of people interested 

in hollow forms. He ended up conducting classes for 9 to 10 people 

at a time for four two-day classes. He also offered to pre-purchase his 

new hollowing tools or you could borrow an extra set to test out. I know 

everyone who ordered tools were not disappointed but a few who didn’t 

order ahead may be on the next order. 

The classes started out with a variety of turning levels from “I’ve made 

one bowl” to “Horst taught Mike J to turn 13 years ago.” Allan Driver 

and Mike worked hard to cut up enough Avocado for each person to turn 

at least 4 pieces during the two days. Mike discovered that when teaching 

at home, you don’t get to just show up and the wood magically appears 

like when teaching at Craft Supplies. 

The first day everyone learned how to safely cut a log on the band saw 

and mount it on the lathe to rough your piece. We all cut a small wet

Tom Edwards Wows SDWT 

On February 20th Tom Edwards 

wowed the club with his presentation 

on resins, repairs, and refurbishing. 

The meeting was packed 

with club members and guests 

Over 100 people watched and 

listened as Tom discussed the 

various types of resins and epoxies 

available. 

The choices include wood filler 

(Home Depot, Lowes). 

He shared his secret technique to 

reduce or eliminate bubbles. 

These included a “corian” top for 

a 5-gallon “vacuum” bucket. 

These methods either boiled 

the bubbles out in vacuum or 

compressed them to make them 

smaller. 

Tom showed many of the molds 

used to shape and contain the 

resins (else you inadvertently 

redecorate the shop or patio floor.) 

Plugs, plastic cups and containers, 

and tape can all be used to keep 

the resin where you want it. 

A one-gallon pressure pot. 

Casting resin and “pour-on finish” 

(Michaels - don’t forget your 40% 

off coupon!). 

5-minute epoxy, and “Quick 

Wood”. 

And a “seal-a-meal”/canister 

option. 

He concluded the discussion by 

showing many of the projects both 

finished and in progress the used 

resins in reconstructive or decorative 

ways.

The February raffle was another smashing success. This was 

the result of the large number of people attending Tom Edwards’ 

demo and the efforts of other club members. 

That’s great news! The better we do with the raffle each 

month, the better quality items I can purchase for the next 

raffle. As I said at last months meeting, ALL of the proceeds 

from the raffle are reinvested in future raffles and never used 

for any other purpose, so come, enjoy, and if possible, participate 

in the raffle.

Spend the Day With 

Jimmy Clewes 

We are in for a real treat at the 

March meeting. Jimmy Clewes 

will be doing an all day demo. As 

usual when we bring in a special 

guest demonstrator, the cost will 

be $25 and will include a Subway 

sandwich lunch. This fee covers 

our expenses to provide you with 

an exceptional demonstrator. 

Jimmy Clewes is one of the best 

demonstrators I have ever seen. 

He is very charismatic and funny 

but his real skill is in making what 

he is doing very understandable. 

Jimmy has been a woodturner and 

woodworker for 22 years. He was 

born and raised in England and 

studied engineering and 3 dimensional 

design. His interest in 

woodturning was rekindled during 

his college years and his limitless 

imagination and creativity led him 

to focus his attention on turning. 

Jimmy teaches all over the world 

and has also made a number of 

excellent DVD’s on turning. He 

currently lives in Las Vegas and 

teaches small classes there. 

Jimmy will show us a range of 

projects chosen to interest everyone 

from beginner to advanced. 

He will start with a “Back to 

Basics” bowl emphasizing tool use 

and process. He will also show us 

his techniques in using dyes on 

figured wood to create an amazing 

effect. He will use green wood to 

do a Natural Edge End Grain Vase 

and will show us his technique 

of making a twist on the lathe. If 

there is time he will also do an 

African Drum style box with a 

sterling silver inlay in the lid. 

We know this will be a popular 

event and we are working hard to 

maximize the seating. 

As usual there will be a line up 

to sign in. If you can bring exact 

change or a check already made 

out to SDWT for $25 it will speed 

up the process. If you want to 

renew your membership or join 

the club I will ask that you do 

that during the lunch break so the 

morning line flows smoothly. 

Please do not arrive before 8 am 

for the 9 am meeting. We welcome 

you at 8 and will put you to 

work setting up but the gate will 

not be opened until 8. Please do 

not disturb the people at Nottingham 

to open early.

wood bowl and were able to see how the carbide cutting tools work for 

the inside. Many people were learning proper techniques for using a 

bowl gouge on the outside and how to sharpen that bowl gouge. After a 

delicious lunch we finished our bowl 

and worked on our first hollow form. 

Mike showed us how he can turn a 

small hollow form quickly (it’s now 

in my collection). It took us newbies 

a lot longer to turn our hollow forms 

but it was definitely worth it. 

On day two, we were expected 

to turn another hollow form using 

whatever wood we chose. I of 

course chose a lovely piece of very 

dry, wormy maple burl from my 

every larger collection of wood.

days of classes to 37 grateful SDWT members. 

There will be an article about the classes with 

photos in the April newsletter but we want to 

say THANK YOU to Mike for his generosity. 

The classes were done at a very low cost to the 

members and Mike will be donating some of the 

proceeds to the SDWT charities. 

We really appreciate you Mike! 

We also thank Karen Freitas for her unending 

generosity in allowing us to use her shop for 

classes…she puts in many hours to make sure 

that the classes run smoothly.

Jimmy is a great demonstrator

MENTOR PROGRAM 

( new members edition ) 

We had a tremendous turnout for the Feb. meeting and Tom did a great 

job (as usual) demonstrating the use of resins as applied to woodturning. 

It was very well received based on the great questions and answers. 

With the influx of newer members, it was brought to my attention that 

some of you would like to have some hands-on guidance on Pen Turning, 

and other small, more basic projects. To meet this need, we have decided 

to use a small scale approach. At the March meeting there will be one or 

more sign-up sheets for newer members to visit a mentor’s shop and get 

hands on guidance turning pens or other designated small beginner’s 

projects. These workshops will be on a first come first serve basis, so make 

sure you get signed up.

tried to “merge” the two months. Please look it over carefully to be sure your name is on the right date and 

time. If there is a blank spot, consider filling your name in. There will be three lathes set up, so three turners on 

each time slot would be great. If you think you are a novice sign up and we will be happy to help you or answer 

questions. We do need you scheduled by March 21 to insure you get a parking pass. Remember you will get
