CONCLUSION At present, the concentration <strong>of</strong> <strong>urban</strong> analysts is mainly on the <strong>impact</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>urban</strong> <strong>growth</strong> on residents within <strong>urban</strong> areas. What is lacking is a focus on the pressures <strong>of</strong> <strong>urban</strong> <strong>growth</strong> on bordering rural municipalities, particularly in western Canada. Research on rural areas is also abundant, as evidenced by programs at Brandon University and University <strong>of</strong> Saskatchewan, as well as research projects like the New Rural Economy Project (Reimer 2006). However, these research programs tend to look specifically at the rural setting and not the complexities <strong>of</strong> the intermunicipal relationship between rural areas and neighbouring <strong>urban</strong> centres. This paper is one step towards contributing to the existing <strong>urban</strong> studies literature by analyzing the tensions in the <strong>urban</strong>-rural nexus, both between neighbouring municipalities and the resident groups within those areas. Contemporary <strong>urban</strong> sociology must look at how the city is only one part <strong>of</strong> the greater metropolitan region, and analyze how <strong>growth</strong> within the city places pressures on outlying areas. Bordering municipalities like Rocky View County struggle to find their identity as <strong>urban</strong> <strong>growth</strong> pressures change land uses and community pr<strong>of</strong>iles over time. Using Rocky View County as a case study <strong>of</strong>fers an important contribution to the literature by demonstrating that contemporary rural areas are complex, contested spaces. <strong>The</strong>re is no simple definition <strong>of</strong> “rural”. <strong>The</strong> degree to which an area can be considered rural is tied to the image one holds <strong>of</strong> what is rural. We must go beyond traditional definitions and investigate the subcategories that exist within rural areas, all <strong>of</strong> which come together to form complex and dynamic municipalities like Rocky View County. <strong>The</strong> Urban-Rural Nexus: <strong>The</strong> <strong>impact</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>urban</strong> <strong>growth</strong> on bordering rural communities 20
