EDITOR’S NOTE
Dear Raghuvanshis,
Jai Jalaram to you all.
We had promised that the 1st issue of the LC
Spotlight was only the beginning and so, here
we are with the 2nd issue of LC Spotlight!
The response to our first issue has been
overwhelming! This has inspired us to ensure
that this issue is even better. Some of the
contributions in the first issue were made
by very young members of the community
and for that I would like to commend
their parents for their encouragement.
I would like to highlight the fact that
this newsletter is not just a source of
entertainment, but also a medium to convey
important and useful information to all.
Please continue to share your thoughts,
knowledge, creativity and ideas with us.
Where do we go from here? We have the usual
articles on various topics i.e. health, philosophy,
business etc. You’re thinking, ‘yes so what’s
new? Well to that I would say the topics may
be few, but the content is always new!! In
this issue we have included a brief history on
Diwali. I will leave the rest of the coverage
as a surprise. Read on and keep informed!
We believe in setting new standards and
surpassing these standards with each issue and
with that in mind, I would like to thank our readers,
the Lohana Mahajan Chairperson - Mr Paragbhai
Somaiya and his committee members for
their ongoing and valuable faith, support and
contribution.
We would like to wish all the readers a
Happy Diwali and a prosperous New Year.
In this auspicious season of radiance
and joy, I dedicate this issue to all those
people who made this newsletter happen!
Until next year, Jai Shree Krishna and best
wishes to all!
Shree Jalaram Bapa
Shree Jalaram Bapa was born in Samvant 1856 (A.D. 1800). His
mother's name was Rajbai and father's name was Pradhan Thakkar.
Their second son was none other than our Shree Jalaram
Bapa.
At a young age of 14 Jalaram's marriage was arranged with Virbai,
a daughter of Thakkar Pragji Somaija. Jalaram was not in favour
of marriage, but his duties towards his parents forced him
to accept this arranged marriage. Jalaram's love towards sadhus'
and sants' grew day by day and he would go to any extent to
entertain sadhus and sants. Jalaram's deep involvement with sadhus'
and sants' led to his separation from his father's business.
SATURDAY 13th Nov 2010
Uncle Valjibhai was very fond of Jalaram, but even that love and fondness would not deter Jalaram's desire
to serve sadhus' and sants'. At the age of 18, he started "Sadavrat" a feeding centre, a place where all sadhus'
and sants' and the needy can go and expect to be fed 24 hours a day. Both Jalaram Bapa and Virbaima started
working for this holy place. Jalaram was then onwards addressed as Bapa - Father of all. People go to Jalaram
Bapa's places for prayers to him and seek his blessings for their personal grieves shortcomings and failures
and many acquire relief and satisfaction.
Human beings during their span of life always aspire to be rich and acquire wealth - they pray for complete
family life - it is such saint as Jalaram Bapa who remains away from such desire and wants. In 1934 during
terrible famine Jalaram Bapa worked very hard to feed those who were suffering. In 1935 Virbaima died and
1937 Jalaram Bapa died while in prayers.
2 Religious Festivals
NAVRATRI
What is Navratri?
Navaratri or Navaratra is a Hindu festival of worship and dance. The word Navaratri literally means nine nights in Sanskrit Nav
= nine and Ratri = nights. It is celebrated during the period of Sarad Masi Aswin by Hindu lunar calendar, all eight days and nine nights
have its importance and is divided into sets of three days to adore three di_erent aspects of the supreme goddess or goddesses.
1st – 3rd day These days are dedicated to Durga Maa; the Goddess of power and energy. On the first three days, the
goddess is invoked as a powerful spiritual force called Durga in order to destroy all our impurities, vices and defects.
4th – 6th day During this period people worship Lakshmi Maa, the Goddess of peace and prosperity. During the next
three days, the Mother is adored as a giver of spiritual wealth, Lakshmi, who is considered to have the power of bestowing
on her devotees the inexhaustible wealth.
7th – 8th day Saraswati Maa is worship during this period, to acquire the spiritual knowledge
9th day On this day Kanya puja is performed, nine young girls representing the nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshiped.
The final set of three days is spent in worshipping the daughter of Brahma as the goddess of wisdom, Saraswati. In order to have
all-round success in life, we need the blessings of all three aspects of the divine femininity, hence, the worship for nine nights.
To celebrate a good harvest and to propitiate the nine planets, women also plant nine different kinds of food
grain seeds in small containers during these nine days and then offer the young saplings to the goddess. During
Navratri, some devotees of Durga observe a fast and prayers are offered for the protection of health and property.
A period of introspection and purification, Navratri is traditionally an auspicious time for starting new ventures.
DIPAVALI
Diwali (also spelt Divali in other countries) or Dipavali is popularly known as the Festival of Lights. It is an
important festival in Hinduism, Sikhism and Jainism, occurring between mid-October and mid-November.
Diwali is an ocial holiday in India, Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago, Malaysia, Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka and
Fiji. The name Diwali is itself a contraction of the word Dipavali (Dipavali), which translates into row of lamps.
Diwali involves the lighting of small clay lamps (diyas) lled with oil to signify the triumph of good over
evil. During Diwali celebrants wear new clothes and share sweets and snacks with near and dear ones. Some
Indian business communities begin the nancial year on the rst day of Diwali hoping for prosperity the
following year.
In Hinduism, Diwali marks the return of Lord Rama to his kingdom of Ayodhya after defeating (the demon
king) Ravana, the ruler of Lanka in the epic Ramayana. It also celebrates the slaying of the demon king
Narakasura by Lord Krishna. Both signify the victory of good over evil. Lakshmi Pujan (also known as Chopra
Pujan) is performed during Diwali, the festival of lights. According to tradition people would put small oil
lamps outside their homes on Diwali and hope Lakshmi will come to bless them. It is believed that Lakshmi
(wealth) goes only to those houses which are clean and where the people are hard working. She does not
visit the places which are unclean/dirty or where the people are lazy.
Bestu Varas is referred to the Hindu New Year according to the Indian calendar based on lunar cycles, and
'Kartak' is the rst month in this New Year while 'Ekam' refers to rst day. People greet each other on this day
by wishing, Saal Mubaarak or Nutanvarsh Abhinandan. Houses are decorated with the aaso palav &
marigolds torans & rangoli at the front door. Home made snacks are oered to the relatives & friends who
come home to give their good wishes.
The LC Spotlight team would like to wish all our community members a very happy Diwali and a prosperous
New Year!
THE MOUNTAIN
Looking up into the heights, the sky blue,
I begin my ascent of the mountain.
With my first step, steady, honest and true,
My heart's filled with the goal I shall attain.
Though as I reach the higher paths I find
Determination begins to waver.
The rocks and icy winds are so unkind
And erode the courage I did savor.
T'would be easy to give up and go back,
Return to my safe and comforting home.
Then my inner voice cries, "Attack, attack!"
So I grit my teeth and push myself on.
When I reach the summit, see all I've gained,
Well worth all the trials, well worth all the
pain.
Interview Tips
Your CV and cover letter have impressed the organisation and you have been called for an interview. While you will be
well equipped with technical knowledge, it is important to pay heed to other factors that are as crucial in selling yourself.
Here are some important tips:
1. Do your homework. Research the company beforehand so that you can showcase that knowledge during the
interview.
2. Know where you’re going. Make sure to find out where the office is and how to get there.
3. Look the part. Your clothing should be neat, pressed, and professional looking.
4. Rehearse beforehand. What are your strengths and weaknesses? Why do you want to work here? Why should we
hire you? and the ever popular Tell me about yourself.
5. Secure your references. Find and seek permission of at least three key people who are willing to serve as your
professional references and be sure they speak highly of you.
6. Arrive early. Arrive at least 15 minutes before the interview.
7. Bring necessary documentation. These may include extra copies of your CV, a copy of your passport, copies of
certicates, or portfolio of writing samples or other professional work.
8. Sell yourself. Develop a 25-second sales pitch that sings your praises. It should include your strengths, abilities, and
what sets you uniquely apart from other applicants.
Every interview is a valuable learning experience. Even if you don’t get this particular job, when the next interview rolls
around, you’ll be much better prepared and more at ease with the whole process.
What Is a Stock Market?
Fortunately, this is generally not true. The stock market is a platform for trading shares
in publicly listed companies (PLCs). It is a place to invest money with the chance that
it will appreciate faster than it would sitting in a bank account. Of course, there is
also a risk that the companies invested in do not perform well, and the investment
shrinks. That is why stock selection is so important. But before delving into that, it
makes sense to know a little bit of background about the nancial system. This will not
only help the amateur investor make the most informed choices, it will also boost
investing condence.
What Is a Public Company?
Public companies list or oat on a stock exchange for two main reasons. Firstly, they
open up their share capital to mainstream investors. That means, instead of the company
being owned and funded by a handful of wealthy private individuals, it is split
into much smaller shares, or holdings. Shareholders own part of the company and
even have a say in how it is run. Another reason is to raise money. A publicly traded
company may decide to issue, say, another million shares to the market. New investors
bring new money to the table, and that funding can be put toward anything from
expansion to paying of bank debt. It puts the business in a better position to grow.
There are other benets to having a public listing. It raises the company’s reputation
for a start. However, this all comes at a cost. There are ongoing stock exchange listing
fees and corporate adviser fees which can seriouslyrack up.
How Do Stock Markets Work?
A stock market is a trading platform for both private and institutional investors (i.e.
banks). The prices are determined by market makers, and uctuate depending on the
buying or selling demand. When buying a stock, the investor is presented with two
prices, like so: 15-16. The rst price (15) is always lower and is known as the bid or the
sell price. The second price (16) is always higher and is known as the oer or the buy
price. The dierence between the bid and the oer (1) is called the spread. That is how
market makers generate prots. Stock markets are only open for set trading hours each
day, although the price may jump overnight when market makers adjust their opening
prices. This might happen if, say, a director dies in the night, or there is a
major re at the headquarters that would interrupt business as usual.
Tackling Exclusion : Supporting Disaffected Students
This book was written by Priya Kanabar and co-author Tina Rae, to support teachers in
tackling difficult student behaviour through an individual and group programme.
The book has been created specically for teachers working with children and teenagers
aged 7-14.
It contains practical sessions and activities that will help teachers:
• Provide a more positive approach to discipline and deliver an effective learning
programme for those with behaviour problems.
• Promote students’ self-image and self-esteem
• Develop attitudes of respect, tolerance and honesty
• Promote self-discipline along with a positive attitude towards authority
• Create a whole school positive discipline environment
The programme was piloted in special schools (for emotional and
behavioural diculties) in deprived areas in London before its publication,
whilst Priya was working for a local government Educational Psychology
Service. As well as working with school sta, children and teenagers, Priya has also worked closely
with parents to train them on positive behaviour management.
Most of laptop owners only realized the importance of laptop
maintenance when they actually had problems. But with all the
benefits your laptop computer is giving you, especially for
those making a living out of it, it’s very important to keep
it in good shape. Following the easy steps below will help to
ensure that it lasts longer and will need less maintenance.
1. Keep food and liquids away from your laptop.Did you know
that laptop spills is one of the worst nightmares for laptop
owners? Spilled liquids damage the electrical components or
cause short circuits that can corrupt data or even permanently
destroy parts. Even if you’re careful, someone else might bump
into your table for you.
2. Cool down. Your laptop generates a lot of heat, especially
if your CPU usage is always max out by running high-powered
applications. Keep your laptop in a well-ventilated place and
don’t block the fan grills on the sides. Laptop coolers are
also a great accessory to help extend the life of your computer.
Coolers have several fans to help reduce the heat and
burning feeling on your thighs.
3. Protect the LCD display. Always close down the lid when you
are not using your laptop, and make sure there is no small item
such as pens or anything that will damage the screen when shut.
Avoid touching the LCD screen that leaves fingerprints. Regularly
clean it with cloth or one of those anti-static monitor
wipes.
4. Don’t drop it. A good carrying bag reduces the risk of
damage due to laptops being dropped or bumped when moving around
or traveling. Don’t leave your laptop on the edge of your desk
because one ill-fated drop could mean goodbye to your mobile
device.
5. Keep the bad guys OFF. Install a good ANTI-VIRUS and ANTI-
SPYWARE to help protect your system from viruses and malwares.
Turn on your Firewall for added layer of security. Turn on
pop-up blockers to avoid those intrusive advertising that may
install software on your laptop. Avoid visiting unknown websites/links
or opening email attachments from unknown sender to
prevent risk of infection.
6. Clean up your system. Make sure you have the latest patch
for your operating system and latest definition for your antivirus.
Defragging hard drives not only speed up data access, it
also improves performance. Remove unused programs and other
components that only consume memory. Clear your temporary internet
files folder and cookies. Delete duplicate files or other
huge files that you no longer use to free up space. Simple
things that you can do for your laptop can go a long long
way. It can also save you some money and headaches.
MAKING A WILL
Making a Will is necessary as it determines
how ones wealth is distributed
and how ones wishes are given effect
after death.
A lawyer should be consulted in drawing up Will
when:
• One jointly owns property with someone other
than their spouse
• One wishes to make specific provisions for a
dependant
• Where overseas property is involved
• Where there is business involved.
Before consulting a lawyer, one needs to consider:
• What assets one has, • Who inherits;
• Who will look after any minor children; and
• Who will be ones executors.
Executors carry out the wishes as stated in the
Will and they have specific duties and responsibilities.
• It is common to appoint upto two executors so
that if one executor dies, the surviving executor
deals with the administration of the estate.
To be valid, a Will:
• must be made by a person who is 18 years or
older;
• must be in writing;
• must be signed in the presence of two witnesses;
• must be signed by the witnesses in the presence
of the person making the Will. A beneficiary or
their spouse cannot be a witness.
A Will can be revoked and replaced with a Will at
any time. (212)
Jai Shree Krishna!
It is a pleasure to be able to pen my thoughts in this edition of the ‘Spotlight’
upon request from the Management Committee.
I wish to, first of all, thank the Management Committee of Dar Mahajan
for proposing me for the post of the Secretary General. I also thank
all the other Centres of East Africa for endorsing my nomination and
thereby electing me unanimously to this august position.
I was truly humbled by the calls and emails received from members of
Dar Mahajan and other East African Centres – supportive and encouraging
(prior to the election) and congratulatory (after the election). I am
honoured by the trust placed in me and I pledge to ensure the continuity
of the Lohana Sports and Cultural Festival and to foster unity and
brotherhood through these Festivals amongst the Lohana Community
in East Africa.
Despite the recent break in continuity of the Festival, the interest to participate
and the zeal to organize is still present amongst the members
in East Africa – in both youths as well as seniors. This is very encouraging
and heartwarming. It is now time to forget the past and move
forward with strong, stable and decisive strides.
With the renewed and growing interest in sports participation by the
youths of Dar es Salaam, I feel it is now opportune to host the Festival
in the ‘Haven of Peace’. I strongly believe we are very able and capable
of hosting and organizing one of the best Festivals and rekindle the
spirit of hospitality that we are famous for. With the strong participation
of youths at all levels of Community Service, Dar es Salaam Mahajan
is in a very strong position to organize a very successful Festival. I
believe the time has now come to do so.
My congratulation to the Editorial Committee of Spotlight on the
publication of this informative newsletter.
SHREE HINDU MANDAL - DAR ES SALAAM
Let me first congratulate Shree Lohana Mahajan for taking out the News Letter, that I am sure would prove to be the easiest and simplest method of meaningful information
to our communities. You may be aware that Shree Hindu Mandal is also in the final stage of reactivation. Let us explore ways to link ourselves in the interest of the
Hindu fraternity.
Shree Hindu Mandal – Dar es Salaam was established in the year 1919.
It has an illustrious history that has helped to sustain its activities thus far.
Therefore let us accept the fact that Shree Hindu Mandal – Dar es Salaam is, in all respects an ALL SEASON institution that cares. People around the world do know our
mother body as an institution that is central for the Hindus in Tanzania..
Now is the time to review the past based on which we shall build many more years ahead of us. Let us work together on the following initiatives.
1. To initiate and encourage dialogue within our communities who indeed share common religion, beliefs and cultures.
2. To create mutual understanding and trust between communities and Shree Hindu Mandal.
3. To encourage, create and support open discussions, discourse and exchange of ideas between communities and Shree Hindu Mandal.
4. To make Shree Hindu Mandal a central and stronger organisation for discussions, deliberations, debates, and consideration of common issues
facing the Members, and generate common responses to such common issues.
5. To promote and advance unity among the members, in order that the relationships between the Communities Leaders and Members and the
Management of Shree Hindu Mandal remain harmonious and pleasant resulting into better service to our community and the people of our land.
The idea is to redefine relations between the members of Hindu Communities and our Mother Body, Shree Hindu Mandal. This will help us devel
oping strength to face realities and challenges or adversities ahead of us.
The question that we all have to answer is HOW DO WE GO ABOUT in achieving the goal that has always been the primary objectives of
Shree Hindu Mandal – Dar es Salaam. Now is the time that we consolidate our efforts to ensure further care for our members.
We have said this before and we shall continue to say that ;
“Our Philosophy is to believe in your positive ideas. Our challenge is to make them work.”
With this few words I would like to wish all Hindus a very Happy and a Prosperous New Year Vikram Samvat 2067. Let our goals, aims and pupose be common.
TO MY DEAR DAUGHTER
Time flies. I realised it when, my daughter said “mummy, you are one generation
behind, there is a lot of difference between your think and mine.”
I said “yes,my dear,I grew up in a large, spacious house near countryside,
whereas you are growing up in a small, compact apartment in a metropolis.
I played in street and grounds where the sun was strong, bright and clear,
You play in roofed sport centers in a misty city where everything is unclear.
I ate vegetables freshly cut from the fields.
You eat frozen vegetables lying in freezers for ages.
I learnt just one language and mastered in that.
You are struggling with Spanish, French and German and none you could fully grasp.
I admit you have a more challenging life than I had.
I cared only about my food, clothes and a bunch of friends, dear.
You worry about good grades, exchange programmes and a rewarding career.
If I say to you,’don’t do it.’ Don’t take it as nagging from a middle
Aged woman whose colourful youth has begun to decline.
It’s your mother’s years of worth taking Some advice.
The simple truths which I took so many years to learn.
I want to teach you fast to keep you from collapsing in this global world.
