Message from the President
Greetings, Choker Fans!
Join me in welcoming Winter and the return of Choker basketball season! Along
with the brisk temperatures and shorter days comes an exciting schedule of
Choker basketball games to beat away those winter doldrums. It probably comes
as no surprise that our athletes and coaches have been hard at work, preparing for
a competitive and successful season. The encouragement you provide as
supportive fans is very important and energizes our teams.
This year, we welcome two new coaches. Del Sandberg heads our men’s basket
ball team, assisted by Jonathan Hubbard, a former Choker player who returns as
assistant coach. The Choker women are led by Derrick Pringle, assisted by Thomas Cook. Both teams
each include two returning players, plus new players ready to play for the Chokers.
Grays Harbor College’s long-standing tradition of excellence – both in the classroom and on the ball
court – is an attribute that we proudly continue. Our mission, proclaiming our quality service to all residents
of Grays Harbor and Pacific counties as a premier learner-center community college, also reflects
this pattern of excellence.
I look forward to joining you in the gym for our men’s and women’s basketball games this season, as
well as on campus and elsewhere in the community. Thank you again for your loyal support of Grays
Harbor College and our Choker teams!
Ed Brewster
President

About Grays Harbor College
Grays Harbor College, one of the oldest two-year community colleges in the State of
Washington, proudly serves all who reside in Grays Harbor and Pacific counties. However, the
reality of attending college classes differs depending on students’ interests and circumstances.
Most students attend classes on the main campus in Aberdeen, seated in state-of-the-art
labs and classrooms, rehearsing in the spacious Wellington Rehearsal Hall, meeting
friends in the social areas of the HUB, researching online at the Spellman Library, and
perhaps working out in the fitness lab before heading home or off to work. For other
students, GHC’s off-campus educational centers in Elma, Raymond and Ilwaco are
located closer to their homes and they enroll in classes at these sites. Washington Online
(WAOL) gives students another option, signing up for classes transmitted directly to them on
the web. GHC offers students academic transfer degrees, which can transfer on to a
four-year college or university. In addition to these two-year associate degree programs,
the College offers an extensive selection of vocational programs, plus adult basic
education classes, English as a Second Language instruction and community
special interest courses. For younger students, college credits can be earned simultaneously
with high school requirements in the Running Start program. Likewise, Tech Prep offers
students in high school vocational course credits. GHC students can choose from a variety of
activities such as Jazz Band or Jazz Choir, theatrical performances at the Bishop
Center for Performing Arts, varsity athletics, and a variety of club opportunities.
To begin enrolling at GHC, prospective students should contact the Counseling Center
(360) 538-4099 or consult the webpage www.ghc.edu/admissions. To further assist students,
there is Financial Aid and many scholarships made available because of the wonderful
generosity of many in the community the College serves.
GHC is a great place to start your future, Call TODAY 360-538-9020!
Although athletic competition between junior colleges existed in the 1930s, the first structured
league and championship events in men’s sports first came about when the Washington State
Junior College Athletic Conference (WSJCAC) was formed in 1946 (and later became the Northwest Athletic
Association of Community Colleges [NWAACC] in 1970 when Mt. Hood Community College from Oregon
joined). The nine charter members of the WSJCAC were Centralia, Clark, Everett, Grays Harbor, Lower
Columbia, Olympic, Skagit Valley (known as Mt. Vernon JC), Wenatchee Valley and Yakima Valley.
Columbia Basin became the tenth member in 1955. Today, the NWAACC has 36 member schools, making it
the largest single community college conference in the United States.
The NWAACC is divided into four regions—Northern, Southern, Western and Eastern. Grays Harbor competes
in the top-notch Western region with Centralia, Clark, Green River, Highline, Lower Columbia, Pierce,
The Grays Harbor College
mascot represents the
choker-setter, a logger with a
particularly courageous job in the
hard worker who places a cable
with large clamps around logs to
remove them from the forest.
The GHC statue, which welcomes
students and guests to the
campus, was carved by Louis
