LONG-RANGE IDENTIFICATION AND TRACKING
The Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) at its 81st session in May 2006 adopted new regulations for
the LRIT together with associated performance standards and functional requirements.
The LRIT regulation has been inserted in SOLAS V/19-1 and entered into force on 1 Jan 2008.
This regulation applies to ships engaged on international voyages:
1. passenger ships, including high-speed passenger craft;
2. cargo ships, including high-speed craft, of 300 gross tonnage and upwards; and
3. mobile offshore drilling units.
The subject vessels must be fully compliant by the 1st Radio Survey after 31 December 2008.
The LRIT information that the vessels will be required to transmit includes the ship's identity,
location and date and time of its position. Ships operating exclusively in sea area A1 are exempted
from the requirement to transmit the LRIT information, provided such ships are fitted with the
Automatic Identification System (AIS).
SHIPBORNE EQUIPMENT
Regulation V/19-1.6 specifies that the shipboard equipment to be used to transmit the LRIT
information (shipborne equipment) shall be of a type approved by the Administration. Compliance
of the shipborne equipment can be demonstrated through satisfactorily completion of a
conformance test in accordance with the procedures and provisions set out in MSC.1/Circ.1257.
