Father's highest level of education (BYS34A): This ordinal variable was obtained<br />

from the student questionnaire. The responses were coded 1 (did not finish high school),<br />

2 (graduated high school), 3 (junior college), 4 (college less than 4 years), 5 (graduated<br />

college), 6 (Master's degree), 7 (Ph.D., M.D., etc.) <strong>and</strong> 8 (don't know).<br />

Mother's highest level of education (BYS34B): This ordinal variable was<br />

obtained from the student questionnaire. The responses were coded 1 (did not finish high<br />

school), 2 (graduated high school), 3 (junior college), 4 (college less than 4 years), 5<br />

(graduated college), 6 (Master's degree), 7 (Ph.D., M.D., etc.) <strong>and</strong> 8 (don't know).<br />

Student's educational aspirations (BYS45): This ordinal variable was obtained<br />

(will finish high school), 3 (vocational, trade, or business school after high school), 4<br />

(will attend college), 5 (will finish college), <strong>and</strong> 6 (higher school after college).<br />

Gender (F3SEX): This variable was a dummy code: 1 (male) <strong>and</strong> 2 (female).<br />

Race (F3RACE): This variable was obtained from students' responses to the<br />

question, "Which best describes you" It was coded 1 (Asian, Pacific Isl<strong>and</strong>er), 2<br />

(Hispanic), 3 (Black, not Hispanic), 4 (White, not Hispanic), <strong>and</strong> 5 (American Indian,<br />

Alaskan native).<br />

wants you to go" This variable reflected students' perceptions of their parents'<br />
