Council saves art
program for children
with disability
ALMOST 30 local youths can
continue attending a special art
program thanks to their local
Councillor, Faith Hopkins of the
Marchant Ward in Brisbane.
‘Saturday Morning Art Club’ - an
initiative of the Cerebral Palsy
League held at Visible Ink in Zillmere,
allows young people with cerebral
palsy and related disabilities to attend
art groups on weekends with other
local community members.
Due to lack of funding, the art
program was to be cancelled before
League staff and local residents
appealed for funding from Council,
which granted almost $10,000 from
the Marchant Livability Committee for
Community Parks & Development
Fund.
Councillor Hopkins said people with
disabilities could be equally as
talented and creative as those
without a disability and praised the
League for its inclusive initiatives.
“Encouraging interaction,
communication and creativity
through programs like the Saturday
Morning Art Club can only strengthen
our community,” Cr Hopkins said.
League In-Home and Community
Support Coordinator, Kerry Ring said
the program provided young people
of all ability valuable skills through
interaction with each other, as well
as creativity.
“The group has become accepting,
wise and inclusive and many informal
friendships and supports are
growing,” Kerry said.
“They also get the opportunity to do
something on Saturdays, be creative
and learn skills for later years through
hosting exhibitions and selling their
artwork.”
Saturday Morning Art Club activities
include canvas painting, lantern
making, masks, clay work, photo
frames and chimes.
The program also encourages
exhibitions, where kids learn about
hanging their art, placing information
cards, hosting and selling.
