International
Exhibition
of Botanical Art & Illustration
The 54 artworks in this travel exhibition
have been selected from the Hunt
Institute’s 11th International Exhibition
of Botanical Art & Illustration,
which included 94 watercolors,
drawings and prints by 64 artists
from 12 countries. The Institute
staged the first International in
1964, followed by successive shows
in 1968–1969, 1972–1973,
1977–1978, 1983, 1988, 1992,
1995–1996, and 1998-1999, and
2001–2002. Collectively, the catalogues
from the earlier shows and
the present one contain the most
comprehensive record available
of 20th-century botanical artists
and illustrators.
These works have been acquired for the Institute’s permanent
collection, one that serves to preserve original
botanical artworks for the future in a controlled museum
environment. We continue to build the collection with
the aim of making it as representative as possible of the
best work being produced throughout the world. In
this effort we have enjoyed the generous cooperation of
many artists, authors and publishers who have deposited
original works in the collection. In future Internationals
we hope to add as many fine artists and illustrators to the
series as possible. For those not yet represented, we seek
information regarding their work and how we might contact
them.
The works of the 952 artists represented in these exhibitions prove that in the world of
art the infinite variety of plant forms and colors still holds special fascination and offers
undiminished challenge and delight.
