The Robert Edward Reiss Award in<br />
Chemical Engineering<br />
Awarded annually to the student in the<br />
Department of Chemical Engineering<br />
who shows the greatest promise of<br />
success in applying the discipline<br />
of chemical engineering to the<br />
improvement of biological products and<br />
medical devices.<br />
The Francis B. F. Rhodes Prize<br />
Established in 1926 by Eben Erskine<br />
Olcott 1874, in memory of his<br />
classmate, Francis Bell Forsyth Rhodes,<br />
School of Mines, 1874, and awarded<br />
from time to time to the member of the<br />
graduating class in materials science<br />
and metallurgical engineering who has<br />
shown the greatest proficiency in his or<br />
her course of study.<br />

Science Scholar Athlete Award<br />
Presented from time to time by the<br />
Office of the Dean to that graduating<br />
student who has distinguished himself or<br />
herself as a varsity athlete and scholar.<br />

Science Student Activities Award<br />
This award is presented to an<br />
undergraduate degree candidate in<br />
<strong>Columbia</strong> Engineering who by virtue<br />
of his or her willingness, energy, and<br />
leadership has significantly contributed<br />
to the co-curricular life of the School.<br />
Robert Simon Memorial Prize<br />
The Robert Simon Memorial Prize was<br />
established in 2001 to honor Robert<br />
Simon, a <strong>Columbia</strong> alumnus who spent<br />
a lifetime making valuable contributions<br />
to computational and mathematical<br />
sciences, and is awarded annually by<br />
the Department of Applied Physics and<br />
Applied Mathematics to the doctoral<br />
student who has completed the most<br />
outstanding dissertation. Should no<br />
dissertation qualify in a given year, the<br />
prize may be awarded to either the most<br />
outstanding student who has completed<br />
a Master of Science degree in the<br />
department or to the most outstanding<br />
graduating senior in the department.<br />
The Richard Skalak Memorial Prize<br />
The Richard Skalak Memorial Prize<br />
was founded in recognition of the<br />
pioneering contributions of Richard<br />
Skalak to the development of the<br />
biomedical engineering program at<br />
<strong>Columbia</strong> <strong>University</strong>. Dr. Skalak was<br />
an inspirational teacher and scholar<br />
who taught students and colleagues<br />
to appreciate the value of broad<br />
interactions between engineering and<br />
medicine, particularly in the fields<br />
of cardiovascular mechanics, tissue<br />
engineering, and orthopedics. The<br />
Richard Skalak Memorial Prize is<br />
awarded annually to a senior biomedical<br />
engineering student who exemplifies<br />
the qualities of outstanding engineering<br />
scholarship and breadth of scientific<br />
curiosity that form the basis for lifelong<br />
learning and discovery.<br />
The George Vincent Wendell<br />
Memorial Medal<br />
Established in 1924 by the friends in the<br />
alumni and faculty of the late Professor<br />
George Vincent Wendell to honor and<br />
perpetuate his memory; a certificate<br />
and medal awarded annually by choice<br />
of the class and the faculty to that<br />
member of the graduating class who<br />
best exemplifies his ideals of character,<br />
scholarship, and service.<br />
