Clark T.Hung in the Department of<br />
Biomedical Engineering. His paternal<br />
grandfather,Yuen-huo Hung, was a<br />
surgeon in Taipei who was renowned<br />
for his practice of medicine and for his<br />
compassion toward patients. Professor<br />
Hung’s maternal grandfather, Chao-chin<br />
Huang, was a famous politician in Taiwan<br />
who dedicated his life to the citizens of<br />
his country, serving as mayor of Taipei,<br />
speaker ofthe Taiwan Provincial Assembly,<br />
and consul general to the United States.<br />
This award is given to a graduating<br />
doctoral student in the Department of<br />
Biomedical Engineering who embodies<br />
the collective attributes of these<br />
distinguished individuals.This student will<br />
have demonstrated great potential for<br />
making significant contributions to the<br />
fields of biomedical engineering and public<br />
health, and for serving as an ambassador<br />
of biomedical engineering.<br />
The Illig Medal<br />
Established in 1898 by a bequest<br />
from William C. Illig, E.M., 1882, and<br />
awarded by the faculty to a member of<br />
the graduating class for commendable<br />
proficiency in his or her regular studies.<br />
Eliahu I. Jury Award<br />
Established 1991 for outstanding<br />
achievement by a graduate student in<br />
the areas of systems communication or<br />
signal processing.<br />
Charles Kandel Award<br />
Medal and cash prize presented<br />
annually by the <strong>Columbia</strong> Engineering<br />
School Alumni Association to that<br />
member of the graduating class who<br />
has best promoted the interests of<br />
the School through participation in<br />
extracurricular activities and studentalumni<br />
affairs.<br />
Andrew P. Kosoresow Memorial<br />
Award for Excellence in Teaching,<br />
TA-ing, and Service<br />
Awarded each year by the Department<br />
of Computer Science to up to three<br />
computer science students for<br />
outstanding contributions to teaching in<br />
the department and exemplary service<br />
to the department and its mission.<br />
Dongju Lee Memorial Award<br />
Established in 2005 by family and<br />
friends in memory of Dongju Lee (DJ),<br />
graduate student in the Department<br />
of Civil Engineering and Engineering<br />
Mechanics, 1999–2003. A certificate<br />
and cash prize awarded annually<br />
by the department to a doctoral<br />
student specializing in geotechnical/<br />
geoenvironmental engineering and of<br />
outstanding promise for a career in<br />
research and academia.<br />
The Sebastian B. Littauer Award<br />
Established in 1979 in honor of Professor<br />
Littauer, a certificate and cash prize<br />
presented annually by the Department<br />
of Industrial Engineering and Operations<br />
Research to a senior for outstanding<br />
promise of scholarly and professional<br />
achievement in operations research.<br />

undergraduate studies.<br />
The Henry L. Michel Award in Civil<br />
Engineering<br />
Established by the <strong>Columbia</strong> Engineering<br />
School Alumni Association in memory<br />
of Henry M. Michel ’49, who built<br />
Parsons Brinkerhoff and MacDonald into<br />
one of the world’s leading engineering<br />
companies. A certificate and cash prize<br />
is presented annually by the Department<br />
of Civil Engineering and Engineering<br />
Mechanics to a student or group<br />
of students in the Civil Engineering<br />
Department who demonstrate<br />
outstanding promise of leadership and<br />
professional achievement in civil and<br />
construction engineering. The award is<br />
in support of a project with emphasis on<br />
the construction industry in which the<br />
students participate.<br />
Paul Michelman Award for Exemplary<br />
Service to the Computer Science<br />
Department<br />
This award is given to a Ph.D.<br />
student in computer science who<br />
has performed exemplary service to<br />
the department, devoting time and<br />
effort beyond the call to further the<br />
department’s goals. It is given in<br />
memory of Dr. Paul Michelman ’93,<br />
who devoted himself to improving<br />
our department through service while<br />
excelling as a researcher.<br />
Millman Award<br />
A certificate and prize, in honor of Jacob<br />
Millman, awarded to two of the most<br />
outstanding teaching assistants for the<br />
academic year.<br />
The Russell C. Mills Award<br />
Presented to a computer science major<br />
for excellence in computer science in<br />
memory of Russell C. Mills, a Ph.D.<br />
candidate in computer science who<br />
exemplified academic excellence by his<br />
boundless energy and intellectual curiosity.<br />
The Mindlin Scholar in Civil<br />
Engineering and Engineering<br />
Mechanics<br />
This award will be made each year to<br />
a graduate student in the Department<br />
of Civil Engineering and Engineering<br />
Mechanics in recognition of outstanding<br />
promise of a creative career in research<br />
and/or practice. This award is made<br />
possible by gifts of friends, colleagues,<br />
and former students of Professor<br />
Raymond D. Mindlin, and, above all,<br />
by the Mindlin family. It is intended to<br />
honor the Mindlin brothers, Raymond,<br />
Eugene, and Rowland, who excelled<br />
in their respective scientific fields of<br />
engineering research, engineering<br />
practice, and medical practice.<br />
The Moles’ Student Award in Civil<br />
Engineering<br />
Awarded to the student in engineering<br />
whose academic achievement<br />
and enthusiastic application show<br />
outstanding promise of personal<br />
development leading to a career<br />
in construction engineering and<br />
management.<br />
The James F. Parker Memorial Award<br />
(Mechanical Engineering Design Award)<br />
James F. Parker served and represented<br />
<strong>Columbia</strong> engineering students as<br />
their dean from 1975 to 1984. He also<br />
distinguished himself in the pursuit<br />
and analysis of two-dimensional art. In<br />
recognition of his special combination of<br />
talents and their integration, the School<br />
of Engineering and Applied Science<br />
salutes the graduate student who has<br />
distinguished her- or himself as a designer.<br />
A person of creative and innovative<br />
inclination receives the James Parker<br />
Medal, as evidenced by outstanding<br />
performance in courses integrating<br />
engineering analysis and design.<br />
