Columbia University Libraries/Information
Services (CUL/IS) is one of the top five
academic research library systems in
North America. The collections include
over 11 million volumes, over 150,000
journals and serials, as well as extensive
electronic resources, manuscripts, rare
books, microforms, maps, graphic and
audio-visual materials. The services and
collections are organized into 22 libraries
and various academic technology
centers. The Libraries employ more than
550 professional and support staff. The
website of the Libraries is the gateway
to its services and resources.
The Ambrose Monell Engineering
Library, located in 422 Mudd, contains
more than 50,000 print volumes
pertaining to all areas of engineering
as well as applied physics, applied
mathematics, and computer science.
Engineering course reserve materials
are circulated from here, and there
are 24 public computing workstations
and two scanners. The Science &
Engineering Library, located in 401
Northwest Corner Building, contains a
core collection of 15,000 print volumes
covering astronomy, biology, chemistry,
physics, and psychology. It houses the
Digital Science Center’s 53 high-end
workstations with specialized software
such as AutoCad, ChemBioDraw,
Matlab, MAYA and Mathematica, eight
scanners, and two reservable group
study/presentation practice rooms.
Online, CUL provides access to
extensive collections of electronic journals,
ebooks (including handbooks), standards,
patents, and society publications.
Databases such as Compendex, INSPEC,
Scopus and Web of Science help patrons
to pinpoint relevant engineering and
science research.
The Columbia University Center
for Career Education (CCE) helps
students and alumni develop the key
competencies necessary to make
informed decisions and take the
necessary steps to achieve their career
goals. CCE establishes connections
and facilitates interaction among
undergraduate students, graduate
students, alumni, employers, and
organizations to generate opportunities
that help students pursue their personal
and professional career objectives.
CCE encourages students and
alumni to visit the Center and to register
for Columbia’s job and internship
database, LionSHARE, to maximize
the level of resources and assistance
they can receive. CCE’s website (www.
careereducation.columbia.edu) contains
information on career search strategies
and tools, a calendar of events,
special events such as career fairs and
networking nights, job and internship
resources and access to LionSHARE.
CCE provides career development
opportunities for students beginning
in their first year at Columbia, offering
a series of coordinated programs,
workshops, seminars, and individual
one-to-one counseling. Career
development is a lifelong process
that may include self-assessment,
competency development, networking,
informational interviewing, internships,
summer work experience, study
abroad, and preparation for the job
search or for the graduate/professional
school application process. Above all
else, it is a process of discovery and
learning, which provides a foundation
for achieving goals throughout life. CCE
partners with students on all of these
aspects of the career search.
CCE manages full-time and
internship opportunities for students
throughout the year. On-campus
recruiting is conducted throughout the
academic year and allows students to
submit their resumes and cover letters
online to employers who have chosen to
recruit on campus. These opportunities
are listed in LionSHARE. There, students
will also find full-time, part-time,
and temporary on- and off-campus
employment opportunities advertised
year-round. The annual Engineering
Consortium Career Fair brings more
than 100 employers to campus to
recruit for engineering and technology
positions. While at Columbia, students
are encouraged to take advantage
of internships, which offer hands-on
experience in a career field.
