are in full swing. Please take the time to attend some of these activities
to show support for our students. It is time to look forward to the next
In-house registration will start soon. Parents we ask that you sit down
with your students and discuss what classes they should be taking next
year. It is important that good choices be made so that we can
determine what sections we need to offer for next school year. Like last
year we will send paper copies of the registration page home for parents
to sign and then students will enter their choice of classes on-line through
Edline. If you have any questions about registration please call us at
I hope everyone is enjoying the New Year! One common theme with the students seems to be
that they are not sure what they want to be when they grow up. When the student has this
issue we work on some interest inventory things to see what their strengths, weaknesses, likes,
and dislikes are. I enjoy using a website called www.RUREADYND.com. This has unlimited
interest inventories, access to colleges that have various majors, different profession
descriptions, and even some scholarship information. When a person first logs onto
RUREADYND there is a link called TESTGEAR. This has hours of free ACT preparation material
for the students to check out and work on.
Sophomores have completed the ACT/PLAN test, and have received their results. The ACT/
PLAN is the practice test for the ACT. It is the exact same type of test as the ACT, but is
designed for sophomores. Test results show a number of things. For example, it compares
individual students to other sophomores across the nation. It has an estimated ACT score, and
shows the student’s college readiness in the four areas tested. It also contains information on
career areas that match up with individual student interests.
This is the time of year when more and more scholarships are made available to seniors.
Students can get information on scholarships from Mrs. Dietz or in the counseling office.
North Dakota State Scholarship applications will be out in March and I will be going into the
senior classes and informing the students on how to register if they qualify for the scholarship.
College Goal Sunday will be held March 25 th , 2012, at United Tribes Technical College from 1:00
-4:00 p.m. It is a free event to help potential students complete the federal financial aid
applications. If you plan to attend you need to bring all necessary information with you. For
more information, visit www.collegegoalnd.org.
When filling out the FAFSA application it is very important that a person select to use the IRS
retrieval tool. If a person chooses to not use the IRS retrieval tool, that application will be
flagged and the student will then have to send their financial information to the IRS to be
reviewed before receiving financial aid. If you do not file your taxes electronically, you may
have to wait 4-6 weeks to apply for financial aid and use the IRS retrieval too. This is a new
process they have added to applying for financial aid. If you have any further questions
regarding the new FAFSA application process feel free to contact me and I will do my best to
answer your questions.
Just a reminder to parents, if you have a son that turned 18 or is turning 18 they need to sign
up for the Selective Service. The website is www.sss.gov. A person can sign up for the Selective
Service up to 9 months in advance, so a person does not need to wait for their 18 th birthday.
Failure to register means a person may not qualify for federal student grants or loans for college,
job training benefits, and many state and federal jobs.

After-Prom Party update
Everything is going GREAT with the after-prom party! This year’s prom is scheduled for Saturday April
14th, 2012 We are currently getting prizes to give away, and planning a fantastic evening for the students.
We ask that you help us out by encouraging your young adults to attend. Ticket cost is $12.00 in advance
(to be sold in the cafeteria, starting the week of prom, April 9th) or $13.00 at the door. That will pay for their
bowling. All pizza, sub sandwiches, fruits, veggies, baked goods, pop, etc., will be provided!! We are excited
to have a Brodini, a Comedian/Magician and photo booth for this year’s entertainment!
White Lace Bridal & Formal Wear is SMCHS’s exclusive retailer for this year’s prom attire. White Lace Bridal
will donate $10.00 for every tuxedo rental and $25.00 for every dress purchase to the St. Mary’s Circle of
Saints and The St. Mary’s After Prom Party. Please see attached flier.
The party will be from 11:30 p.m. to 3:30 am. Feel free to call Midway Lanes and check when your son or
daughter arrived or to be sure they are still there. We check in each student when they arrive and if they
leave before 3:00 we will keep track of the time the student left. You can also call "Shawn" at 258-5786 later
the next week to check what time your student checked out. We would like to commend you on holding
strong in your position of NOT renting hotel rooms or letting them have house parties after prom. There is no
need, especially since we have a great alternative place for them to go after prom. We truly feel this
alternative party has saved and will save our students from accidents that could happen.
Also, we would like to thank those of you that have donated personally or through your businesses. We
appreciate it very much. We have had some parents ask what types of things they could still donate. Some
suggestions would be: movie certificates, mall certificates, massage certificates or electronic store
certificates. Another way to donate is to help sponsor the pizzas or sub sandwiches needed for the party,
the amount usually comes to $200.00 each.
Let's get involved to make this a memorable and safe night in our children's lives. If you would like to support
the party by donating items or money to be used as prizes, please forward to the address below. We are very
happy to report that all the shifts for working the After Prom Party are filled! Thank you!!
It's very reassuring to know the students have a fun safe place to be after-prom. We thank the many of you
who have supported our efforts in the past with contributions and with the help you have given us by working at
the party. Questions Call Shawn at (h) 258-5786 or (c) 220-5885.
Thank you very much,
The 2012 After-Prom Party Guidelines
APRIL 14, 2012
The after prom party is planned and given to continue in the celebration of prom for all SMCHS
students. In order for everyone to enjoy themselves, the following guidelines have been developed.
The party is open to all SMCHS sophomores, juniors, and seniors. All students may bring one
guest who is a 2012 high school sophomore or above. The guest will be admitted only if they arrive
at the same time as the person inviting them or unless prior arrangements are made with the
chairperson of the party. Everyone must have a ticket to be admitted. Ticket prices include
bowling, featured entertainment, pop, food, and all activities. Students do not need to attend
prom in order to attend the after-prom party!!!
The party will begin at 11:30 p.m. and will end at 3:30 am. There will be no refunds for anyone
leaving or being asked to leave early. Prizes will be given away starting around 3:00 am.
Appropriate action will be taken if someone is suspected to be under the influence of alcohol or
any controlled substance. Everyone attending is subject to being checked at the door. Should
anyone gain admittance and later be observed exhibiting improper behavior, he or she will be
escorted from the party and parents will be contacted. It is the parents’ responsibility to leave a
number where they can be reached in the event they will not be at home. (Please contact
Shawn at 220-5885 with that number.)
No alcohol or controlled substance will be allowed on the premises. Appropriate action will be
taken if anyone is caught in the possession of alcohol or any other controlled substance.
Once a student leaves the party, they will not be readmitted. If a student leaves before the end of
the party they will sign out with time of departure on the sheet provided. Should the student
need to go to their car during the evening, they must be escorted to and from their car by the
adult worker assigned for that purpose.
No one shall be admitted after 1:00 am.
Food and beverages will not be permitted in the bowling pit.
No smoking permitted inside Midway Lanes at any time.
Proper care must be taken in using the facilities and equipment. Improper use will result in
eviction. Students will be responsible for damages.
At the end of the evening prizes will be awarded. Must be present to win!
