Welcome
Today in Worship
This morning Dr. Vic Pentz continues our winter sermon series, Living for the City: The Seven
Churches of Revelation, with a sermon entitled “Truth: Is Christ the Only Way” The sermon is
based on the letter to the church at Pergamum found in Revelation 2:12-17.
Please note that in this morning’s bulletin, the order of worship for the 8:45 and 10 a.m. services
appears on pages 3-5; the order of worship for the 11:15 a.m. service begins on page 6.
The Kirkin’ of the Tartan
This morning in all three traditional worship services we celebrate the Kirkin’ of the Tartan.
“Kirk” is the Scottish word for “church.” This ceremony reminds us of the Scots heritage of
the Presbyterian Church and our roots in Reformed Theology. A tartan is the distinctive
woven fabric that a clan or family grouping uses to identify itself to others. The tradition of
the Kirkin’ began in this country during World War II, before the United States entered the
war. Dr. Peter Marshall, a Presbyterian pastor and then Chaplain of the United States Senate,
wanted to encourage American identification with the British motherland and determined
that he would target at least those Americans of Scots descent. The Kirkin’ of the Tartan
ceremony was created by Dr. Marshall and has been celebrated in Presbyterian churches across
the country. It is also a popular event in other “colonies” of Scotland: Canada, Australia, and
New Zealand. The tartan banners used in this service have been donated by Peachtree families.
A list of those donating banners appears on page 13 of your bulletin.
Living for the City: Praying for our City
Thursday, 12 noon
THIS WEEK: Perimeter Mall Food Court (Meet at the base of the escalators.)
As we live for the city, we must pray for the city. Join with Peachtree members, pastors, and staff for
prayer and lunch. We will gather each Thursday at 12 noon at a different metro-Atlanta location.
Welcome, Guests!
We welcome to our worship services all who are visiting with us today. Please complete the
information requested on the Friendship Pad in the black folder at the center-aisle end of your
pew. If you are considering membership at Peachtree, join us today for Exploring Peachtree:
An Orientation for New Members. This class, which meets the 1st and 3rd Sundays of
each month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Room 2209, provides vital information about our
congregation and its ministries; an understanding of our beliefs about Jesus Christ, salvation,
and the Bible; and an explanation of our expectations for those who join as members. At the
conclusion of the class, which includes lunch, our Session will meet to receive new members.
Exploring Peachtree next meets February 4. For information, or class registration, contact
Dee Dee Lynch (404-842-5825, dlynch@peachtreepres.org).
Lord Jesus, you have revealed yourself to us as the way, the truth,
and the life. We give you thanks today for the legacy of men and
women who boldly contended for your truth. We ask for the help
of your Holy Spirit that we might follow their example. We confess
that we are often confused about truth because of the many voices in
our world that claim to be true. We confess that we are often timid
about truth, lest we offend others with our own claims. Like your
prophets, apostles, and reformers of every age, make us bold in
your truth, and grant to us humility that reflects your grace. Give
us courage even now as we make our silent confessions ….
The text to the anthem
is appropriate for the
21 st c., a time when
many have lost a
sense of wonder. As
the anthem begins,
we see the glory and
majesty of God. At its
conclusion, the text
reminds us that the
transcendent God
invites us to love him
and be in relationship
with him, our
everlasting friend. Do
you know God as both
above us and near us
From the falter of breath, through the silence of death,
To the wonder that’s breaking beyond;
God has woven a way, unapparent by day,
For all those of whom heaven is fond.
From frustration and pain, through hope hard to sustain,
To the wholeness here promised, there known;
Christ has gone where we fear and has vowed to be near
On the journey we make on our own.
From the dimming of light, through the darkness of night,
To the glory of goodness above;
God the Spirit is sent to ensure heaven’s intent
Is embraced and completed in love.
