<strong>The</strong> market for sk<strong>in</strong> lighteners is boom<strong>in</strong>g everywhere. Some people <strong>of</strong> Asian, Hispanic and African heritage<br />

use the creams because lighter sk<strong>in</strong> is <strong>of</strong>ten considered a status symbol <strong>in</strong> their cultures. Many consumers,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Caucasians, use the creams to dim<strong>in</strong>ish age spots or to even out sk<strong>in</strong> tone, while others want to<br />

lighten their entire face or bodies.<br />

<strong>The</strong> creams were bought at a variety <strong>of</strong> stores: a large beauty-supply store <strong>in</strong> the uptown neighborhood, an<br />

herbal medic<strong>in</strong>e shop <strong>in</strong> shopp<strong>in</strong>g malls Ch<strong>in</strong>atown, and beauty parlor and salon on each and every corner<br />

<strong>of</strong> the cities.<br />

Researchers say people are affected differently by mercury, depend<strong>in</strong>g on the amount and duration <strong>of</strong><br />

exposure, among other variables. <strong>The</strong> amounts <strong>of</strong> mercury found by the previous studies <strong>in</strong> many countries<br />

were troubl<strong>in</strong>g and could lead to kidney damage at the least. 3<br />

Sometimes it is read or heard about banned sk<strong>in</strong> whiten<strong>in</strong>g cream products and must have wonder why.<br />

This is because these products conta<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>gredients that have been found to be very harmful to human<br />

health. For example: mercury (II) chloride is used as an active chemical <strong>in</strong> several sk<strong>in</strong> whiten<strong>in</strong>g creams.<br />

When applied, the chemical readily absorbs through the sk<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>to the bloodstream. [4] Basically it is used<br />

because; mercury has the ability to make darks spots on the sk<strong>in</strong> lighter as well as gett<strong>in</strong>g rid <strong>of</strong> hyperpigmentation<br />

on the sk<strong>in</strong>.<br />

History <strong>of</strong> mercury used <strong>in</strong> cosmetics product dates back to the early 1900s. <strong>The</strong>y were used <strong>in</strong> bleach<strong>in</strong>g<br />

soaps and creams dur<strong>in</strong>g those days. Even before early 70s, mercury was already popularly used as a sk<strong>in</strong><br />

lightener. Most creams conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g mercury were ma<strong>in</strong>ly target<strong>in</strong>g the black generation <strong>in</strong> the United States.<br />

2.1 Pathways <strong>of</strong> <strong>Mercury</strong> Poison<strong>in</strong>g<br />

“It goes through the [sk<strong>in</strong>] tissue and then goes to the liver ma<strong>in</strong>ly. It has a long life <strong>of</strong> up to 90 days <strong>in</strong> the<br />

body after consumption. When the liver metabolizes it, it then goes <strong>in</strong>to the bile duct, and part <strong>of</strong> this is reabsorbed.<br />

<strong>The</strong> rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g goes out from the kidney but it cont<strong>in</strong>uously accumulates <strong>in</strong> the body. Cont<strong>in</strong>uous<br />

use <strong>of</strong> mercury-conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g products will result <strong>in</strong> chronic low-dose exposure toxicity or poison<strong>in</strong>g over a<br />

period <strong>of</strong> time.<br />

But mercury poison<strong>in</strong>g doesn’t just harm the person us<strong>in</strong>g the product.<br />

“If pregnant women are us<strong>in</strong>g these mercury-conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g products, then it can disturb the pregnancy or have<br />

damag<strong>in</strong>g effects on the foetus,” Younger women may have <strong>in</strong>fertility issues with an overdose <strong>of</strong> mercury<br />

and the immune system can get compromised.<br />

3. Impacts <strong>of</strong> <strong>Mercury</strong> on Health and Environment<br />

3.1 Impact <strong>of</strong> <strong>Mercury</strong> on Health<br />

<strong>The</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> adverse effect <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>organic mercury conta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> sk<strong>in</strong> lighten<strong>in</strong>g soaps and creams is kidney<br />

damage. <strong>Mercury</strong> <strong>in</strong> sk<strong>in</strong> lighten<strong>in</strong>g products may also cause sk<strong>in</strong> rashes, sk<strong>in</strong> discoloration and scarr<strong>in</strong>g, as<br />

well as a reduction <strong>in</strong> the sk<strong>in</strong>’s resistance to bacterial and fungal <strong>in</strong>fections. Other effects <strong>in</strong>clude anxiety,<br />

depression or psychosis and peripheral neuropathy. 1<br />

<strong>The</strong> medical literature reports specific <strong>in</strong>stances <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividuals suffer<strong>in</strong>g from the aforementioned health<br />

effects follow<strong>in</strong>g exposure to mercury through sk<strong>in</strong> lighten<strong>in</strong>g creams and soaps. One case report describes<br />

a 34-year-old Ch<strong>in</strong>ese woman who developed nephrotic syndrome, a condition marked by high levels <strong>of</strong><br />
