For the fourth year running, <strong>Newzoo</strong> has performed<br />

simultaneous surveys in multiple countries across all platforms<br />

and business models. The data is representative of each<br />

countries’ population aged 10 to 65 (with internet access).<br />

Before the data is published it is validated and benchmarked<br />

with other sources as well as clients. <strong>Newzoo</strong> publishes three<br />

reports a year but the main business is providing access to the<br />

full data and making this actionable for each client.<br />

We gather data by setting up surveys and performing field research<br />

within large independent panels, offered by leading global consumer<br />

panel providers. Respondents are selected carefully and are<br />

representative for each nation, in terms of geography, education income,<br />

age, gender etc. This ensures we can translate our survey results into<br />

absolute nation-wide figures, crucial for our clients. At the heart of our<br />

approach are five key starting points:<br />

People. People are the starting point. They drive changes in time and<br />

money spent. Analysis of sales revenues is not enough. People play.<br />

People buy.<br />

Cross-platform. We need perspective. Our surveys always include all<br />

main game platforms and genres to get the total picture and monitor<br />

overlap and shifts.<br />

International. The games industry is extremely international. We<br />

facilitate benchmarking of different territories by simultaneously<br />

surveying multiple countries.<br />

Hottest topics. You need to be an active player in this industry to<br />

know what data is needed next. That is why we invest in events,<br />

network on a global scale (e.g. our B2B portal gamesindustry.com)<br />

and involve clients in our product development.<br />

Definitions<br />

Online “casual” games on game websites. These are games played on<br />

or downloaded from casual game websites including premium<br />

versions of games, downloaded from such sites (but not social<br />

networks such as Facebook).<br />

Plus.<br />

<strong>Games</strong> on a mobile devices. This includes all mobile (smart) phones,<br />

iPod Touch, iPad or tablet (but not handheld consoles)<br />

MMO games. Massive Multiplayer Online (Role Playing) <strong>Games</strong>, often<br />

referred to as MMOs or MMORPGs (e.g. World of Warcraft, Dofus,<br />

SWTOR, League of Legends) and Virtual Worlds.<br />

<strong>Games</strong> on a (portable) game console. This includes Xbox, Xbox360,<br />

PlayStation 1/2/3, Wii, (3)DS(i), PSP, PS Vita as well as older consoles.<br />

Boxed PC or Mac games. These are games on a CD or DVD (boxed<br />

product) that you install on your PC, laptop or Mac before playing.<br />

Downloaded PC or Mac games. These are games that you download<br />

and install on your PC, laptop or Mac before playing (excluding MMO<br />

game downloads and premium “casual” games from casual game<br />

websites)<br />

<strong>Newzoo</strong> fully realizes that boundaries between platforms and genres are<br />

becoming blurry. In <strong>2012</strong> <strong>Newzoo</strong> will announce a new cross-screen<br />

segmentation.<br />

Survey Methodology<br />

Online survey performed in US, UK, DE, FR, PL, TR, NL and BE in<br />

March <strong>2012</strong>. BR, ES and a third country in September <strong>2012</strong>.<br />

gamers on a specific platform) as shown in our Data Explorer, the<br />

survey results were multiplied with the “internet population” for<br />

each individual age /gender group. These figures were derived from<br />

national consensus data.<br />

Before publication of any data, <strong>Newzoo</strong> also performs validation<br />

checks in various ways:<br />

Validation questions. The surveys always include several questions<br />

posed to all respondents on topics that have reliable public data, e.g.<br />

TV channels, use of individual social networks.<br />

Client check. The extrapolated survey results are compared with<br />

actuals from our clients, e.g. specific game portal visitors, revenues,<br />

franchise popularity.<br />

<strong>Market</strong> data check. <strong>Newzoo</strong> maintains a dbase of published market<br />

figures from alternative sources, e.g. NPD, Screen Digest, DFC,<br />

GameVision Europe, Nielsen.<br />

Business data check. <strong>Newzoo</strong> frequently assists VCs and companies<br />

seeking investment. This insight into actual revenues and company<br />

data is used as a reality check.<br />

Emerging markets<br />

The starting point for emerging game markets such as Turkey and<br />

Poland is the active internet population.<br />

For Poland for instance there are 38.4M inhabitants, 23.8M people<br />

with access to internet and 18.1M active internet users.<br />
