SUSTAINABLE TECHNOLOGIES CENTER<br />

LEAD CERTIFICATION<br />

Lead Certified Renovator, Initial<br />

This eight-hour course trains contractors on safe work<br />

practices in housing with lead-based paint and how to<br />

comply with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s<br />

Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule. The course<br />

includes health concerns; regulations; work procedures;<br />

recordkeeping; and training non-certified workers. This<br />

training is required for any contractor who is involved in<br />

any construction activity that will or has the potential to<br />

disturb lead-based paint in housing constructed prior to<br />

1978 in facilities that can be occupied by children under<br />

the age of six or where pregnant women reside. This<br />

course has been approved by the EPA for the purpose<br />

of certification. After completion and passing the<br />

written exam, students will be certified per regulatory<br />

requirements. Materials are included in the course fee.<br />

Lead Dust Sampling Technician<br />

This eight-hour course trains students to conduct nonabatement,<br />

lead dust clearance testing. At the end of<br />

the course, students will understand the federal, state<br />

and Indian tribe regulatory requirements for lead dust<br />

clearance testing; conduct a visual inspection and<br />

correctly identify visible dust, debris and deteriorated<br />

paint; appropriately determine where to take dust<br />

samples and how to develop a sampling strategy;<br />

collect dust; interpret the results of a laboratory<br />

analysis for lead; apply these skills to conduct an<br />

appropriate clearance test in post-renovation and<br />

other circumstances; and write a complete, accurate,<br />

and understandable report of sampling results. This<br />

course has been approved by the U.S. Environmental<br />

Protection Agency for purposes of certification. After<br />

completion of the training and passing the written<br />

exam, students will be certified as Dust Sampling<br />

Technicians. Materials are included in the course fee.<br />

Energy$mart Academy<br />

New Mexico Energy$mart Academy (NMESA) offers<br />

comprehensive trainings in all aspects of energy<br />

efficiency and residential weatherization. From entry-<br />

level fundamentals to more complex energy auditor<br />

level classes, there is a progression in training that<br />

enables the student to fully transition into new green<br />

jobs in the economy. NMESA also offers supporting<br />

trainings that conform to EPA and OSHA requirements<br />

for health and safety, including lead, asbestos and other<br />

hazardous materials and various OSHA classes. Our<br />

state of the art labs include a full-size pressure cabin,<br />

combustion training lab, attic demonstration unit,<br />

attic air sealing props, House of Pressure and insulation<br />

training wall. We have a mobile training unit to support<br />

the field trainings. Most classes will include extensive<br />

hands-on training, both in the lab and in the field.<br />
