Chaco Canyon - One Day, Near the Summer
Equinox Off Campus
This World Heritage Site and national park hosts a
complex of buildings that infer celestial relationships.
This one-day journey will give you firsthand experience
of the beauty, precision and intricacy of several Great
Houses. We will walk through most of the architecture of
“downtown Chaco,” as well as Una Vida. Many sites in
the canyon align to the solar standstill, and Pueblo stories
can provide illumination on the worldview still living in
the stones. Students will travel in a college van. Students
bring their own lunch, snack and plenty of water.

Hike to Cerro Grande, Overlooking the
Valles Caldera NEW! Off Campus
Cerro Grande is a large volcanic dome on the
southeastern rim of the Valles Caldera. At the summit
(10,200 ft.), there are spectacular views looking into
the caldera and across the southern Jemez Mountains.
The hike is moderately strenuous, climbing 1,200 feet
in elevation, and is 4 miles round trip. There is much
geology to discuss en route, including the volcanic
history of the Jemez Mountains prior to the eruption
of the Valles Caldera, and the long history of fresh
water lakes that have existed within the caldera. Bring
appropriate hiking gear, water, and picnic lunches – to
be eaten at the summit of Cerro Grande.

HERS Energy Rater Training NEW!
This training prepares students to take the RESNET
(Residential Energy Service Network) certification exam.
Energy Rater Certification enables students to perform
HERS Energy Rating and qualify homes for Energy Star
designation. This is a comprehensive building-science
course, which includes blower door and duct blaster
training and energy modeling. The course consists
of classroom instruction, lab time and field work. At
the end of the course, students will take the national
RESNET written exam and will complete two hands-on
energy ratings. This class is most suitable for people
with construction backgrounds and good math skills.
Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.,

BPI Building Analyst Training
This five-day Building Performance Institute (BPI)
Building Analyst Training course prepares participants
to conduct a comprehensive inspection and diagnostic
analysis of a home’s energy consumption, paying
special attention to health and safety issues that
can arise during energy efficiency improvements.
Topics include evaluating and documenting how the
building as a whole performs, energy assessments,
blower door testing, ventilation issues, combustion
testing and how to develop a work scope for energy
efficiency improvements. The written exam and field
testing are included although a separate two-hour
field test needs to be scheduled with the instructor.
Successful completion of the class, along with passing
the written and field tests, provides certification by BPI
as a BPI Certified Building Analyst. This course is for
HVAC, electrical and general contractors, remodelers,
installation and weatherization crews, inspectors,
auditors and designers. Amanda Evans is a HERS Energy
Rater and a BPI Certified Building Analyst.
