Photographic Lighting: Tabletop Items
Understanding basic product lighting is the focus of
this hands-on class. Using two simple light sources,
learn how to control the light to produce excellent
photographs of small items such as jewelry, pottery,
items to sell on the Internet and anything smaller
than a bread box. We will also learn how to light and
photograph flat artwork such as paintings, drawings,
etc. Having an advanced camera with “macro focus”
capabilities is ideal but not essential. Steve Walenta is a

Photographic Lighting: Portraits
Understand basic portrait lighting and learn to use
simple techniques to produce better portraits in this
hands-on class. Work with flash and available light to
create moods that are dreamy, dramatic and everything
in-between. Bring a more advanced SLR camera
and/or flash to class and take full advantage of the
lighting methods we will cover, but any camera/flash
is welcome. Class size is limited. Steven Walenta is a
talented Santa Fe-based photographer and instructor.

SOUTHWEST
EXPLORATIONS
The outdoors beckons, and we are responding to the call!
Join our faculty and travel near or far for a wonderful
exploration of the Southwest. We also are teaching about
the region in the classroom, where we look at ancient
and contemporary cultures. Whether you want to hike
the terrain or sit comfortably in discussion, Southwest
Explorations will expand your understanding of this area
and the cultures within it.
Alpine Ecology Off Campus
In this field class we will examine this resilient,
hearty and beautiful ecosystem. You’ll experience
the fascinating habitats that cover our mountaintops
including weather patterns and geology. The moderate
hike (five to six miles) will also allow you to view the
alpine/montane ecotone and the various factors that
shape ecosystems, from mountainside to microclimate.
Students must provide their own transportation. The
itinerary is provided after registration.

Digital Photography
Ready to take the leap into the world of digital
photography but confused by the various products and
technologies This class simplifies the entire process by
examining all aspects of the digital camera. We’ll discuss
resolution, compression, white balance, file formats
and media cards plus all the other settings found on
today’s digital cameras. In addition, you will also learn
photography basics such as shutter speed, aperture or
f-stop, ISO, flash, lenses, focus and many other features.
Steve Walenta is a digital-imaging specialist with years
of experience.

Geologic Exploration into the Valles
Caldera Off Campus
This one-day field trip will enter the Valles Caldera
National Preserve, exploring the fascinating geologic
story told by rock exposures inside the caldera. The
caldera has experienced profound changes involving
resurgent uplift, numerous volcanic eruptions, lakes
and erosion of the rim. Our journey includes numerous
scenic valleys inside the caldera, including Valle Grande,
Valle San Antonio and Valle Toledo. Wildlife sightings
are common. The $10 entry fee into the preserve is
included in the course fee.
