The Art of Marquetry 

Marquetry is a technique where different colors of 

wood veneers are carefully cut to fit precisely together 

creating a design in wood. The workshop will focus 

on the double-bevel method of marquetry. This highly 

accurate technique is cut by hand and creates tightly 

fitting marquetry pieces. With practice, the cutting of 

the veneers can be mastered. Through daily lecture, 

demonstration and hands-on work, participants will 

gain a thorough understanding of marquetry. No

SANTA FE NEW! 

Summer Arts in Santa Fe is a series of workshops hosted by 

SFCC’s School of Arts and Design. The workshops will take 

place during the weeks surrounding the Sculptural Objects 

and Functional Art (SOFA) international exhibit at the 

Santa Fe Convention Center on August 4 to 7. Below are 

the workshops offered by this year’s renowned instructors. 

Drawing By Seeing 

This workshop will utilize concepts from John Torreano’s 

book “Drawing By Seeing.” The morning sessions are 

group directed and consist of exercises designed to 

confront the difference between seeing for everyday use 

and seeing for the purpose of drawing. The afternoon 

sessions will be individually directed wherein students try 

to apply ideas from the morning sessions to their own 

work. A number of slide discussions will be included. No

Carving Techniques for Wood Sculpture 

This class is an introduction to direct carving techniques 

for wood sculpture. Begin with whole logs and by 

utilizing a variety of carving tools, from chain saw to 

wood lathe to chisel, explore the most direct path 

from idea to form. Surface treatments and texture will 

also be explored as a means of enhancing the form. 

Demonstrations will focus on safety, efficiency and the 

nature of wood as a material for sculpture. Start with 

an introductory project to develop familiarity with tools 

and then move on to more self-directed projects that 

represent a more personal aesthetic. Students will leave 

with the knowledge and skills to continue working. No

Summer Arts in Santa Fe 

Action Theater Training 

Through action workshop, participants learn about the 

present moment, how to be here, unveiling themselves 

to themselves, one moment at a time and one moment 

leading to the next. Zaporah’s exercises which are 

physical, vocal and verbal, invite the practitioner into 

unknown yet uncannily familiar territories, territories of 

the embodied imagination. By examining awareness, 

play, relationship, stillness and silence, actions 

become enlightened, become fresh. The capacity for 

feeling is strengthened as are the roots and tools of 

expression. This workshop is for the novice as well as

Intensive Monotype 

This intensive, in-depth, five-day course will cover the 

history, techniques and reasons for making monotype 

prints. Each all-day session will be divided between 

demonstrations and supervised work time. Updated 

methods for a wide variety of traditional techniques 

will be presented along with new experimental 

directions. The purpose of the class is not to produce 

instant masterpieces, but rather for each student to 

become familiar and comfortable with a wide variety

A Safer, Greener Etching Method 

Etching aluminum with copper sulfate is a safer, easier 

and cheaper alternative to traditional copper and zinc 

etching in acid. It even aquatints itself! Students will 

learn to prepare the etching bath, ground their plates 

with acrylic floor polish, transfer a drawing to the plate 

and scribe their design through the ground. Aquatinting 

methods will be demonstrated and practiced– no rosin, 

no spraying, no nothing! No refunds after July 17. To

Continuing Education art classes are designed for creative 

people of all levels. Whether you are a beginning or more 

advanced artist, Continuing Education has a class for 

you. Some of the classes include all of the supplies; others 

require you to purchase materials. All supply lists are

Beginning Drawing 

Explore drawing in a supportive environment where 

creativity is encouraged. You’ll learn basic skills for 

drawing from life, incorporating both traditional and 

contemporary methods. Several approaches to drawing 

will be covered which include using pencil, conte 

crayon and colored pencils. Demonstrations, art history 

and critiques enhance the work done in class. John St.

Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain 

Retrace your steps to the days when it was fun to play 

with art supplies and just make something all your own. 

“Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” means picking 

up a pencil, doing a series of simple, low-stress exercises 

and turning it all into hours of satisfying, deeply 

meditative activity. Watch yourself progress, week after 

week, from basic student to someone who will want 

their sketchbook firmly in hand.

Experiments in Drawing 

In this mixed-media class, students explore 

2-Dimensional expression. Students use a variety of 

drawing and collage exercises. Line quality, layering, 

mood and collage are explored, while experimenting 

with representational and abstract drawing. This class 

is fun-filled, uses a variety of drawing tools and leads 

students to new confidence in their drawing skills. Edie 

Tsong is an accomplished artist based in Santa Fe. There 

is no class on July 4.

Charcoal Landscape Drawing NEW! 

Learn to draw landscapes with vine charcoal in a loose 

and fun manner. Produce drawings in no time that 

look exactly like the scene you’re viewing. Michael 

McGuire will demonstrate an easy and fun way to 

create convincing landscape drawings with simple 

vine charcoal. Experience the fun similar to painting 

with very large brushes. We will create “brushes” with 

charcoal that sweep across the paper with ease and 

delight. Only a few inexpensive materials are needed.

Pastels at Twilight Off Campus 

Pastel painting’s luminous color, combined with the 

immediacy of drawing techniques, make this the perfect 

medium to capture Santa Fe sunsets. Classes are held 

outdoors; the first two hours of each class focus on 

mastering pastel techniques and composition. The last 

hour of class, as the light fades, is all color, and the 

focus is on simplifying and loosening up. Good drawing 

skills and prior experience are recommended. Each 

participant’s individual way of seeing and learning is 

supported. The course includes demonstrations and 

critiques. Jane Shoenfeld has a Master of Fine Arts 

degree from Pratt Institute. She has been teaching 

pastel landscape painting for 17 years.

Canyon Colors: The Pastel Landscape at 

Ghost Ranch Off Campus 

Join master pastelist Jane Shoenfeld on an excursion to 

Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu. On Friday evening, the class 

will meet in the college studios, where the instructor 

will teach you how to create brilliant color with pastel 

techniques. On Saturday, the class will meet in Abiquiu. 

You will create expressive pastel paintings of these 

canyons and mesas. Jane Shoenfeld has been teaching 

pastel landscape painting at Ghost Ranch for 12 years.

Pastel Colors 

Using pastels, participants will learn how to create 

subtle colors to enliven their artworks. Choosing pastel 

colors visually, rather than blending, trains the eye to 

see color and value simultaneously. The trained eye will 

bring successful results in all media. Instruction is given 

on how to become a composer in the creation of art 

rather than a literal copyist.

Acrylics at Night 

This evening course is for beginning artists interested 

in working with acrylic paints and mediums. Structured 

assignments and demonstrations will help you to 

explore the use of liquid mediums, solid gels and 

opaque pastes. Color mixing, composition and surface

Beginning Painting – Acrylic 

This course is for beginning artists interested in working 

with acrylic paints and mediums. Experienced artists

and approaches are welcome. Some experience with

Introduction to Abstract Painting 

This oil painting course is an opportunity to experiment 

with what you already know and to better understand 

abstraction. All the exercises help your goals in painting 

as well as abstraction, which is not very different 

from painting representative work. The second half 

of the course will focus on finding your voice through 

abstraction. Painting experience is recommended but 

not mandatory. John St. Peter has a Master of Fine Arts 

degree in painting and enjoys encouraging artists along 

their own creative path.

Fun With Watercolor I 

This painting class introduces beginning students to 

the fundamentals of making beautiful watercolors. 

Learn how to use paint, brushes and paper to create 

easy and fun effects that excite and entertain. All the 

basic techniques of paint application and tool usage are 

covered, as well as professional strategies for starting, 

executing and finishing paintings. Have lots of fun 

with watercolors while learning professional-quality

Beginning Silk Painting 

This course will introduce the exciting field of painting 

on silk. Even beginners can produce amazing wearable 

art accessories, quilting, wall hangings and fine art. Use 

many different techniques when dyeing and painting on 

silk including shibori, resist and discharge techniques. 

A review of the history of silk, its many uses and its 

properties will be discussed. Contemporary use of silk, 

as in inkjet printing, printmaking and experimental 

techniques, will be encouraged in this class. Most 

supplies are included in the course fee. Sande Anderson 

has been working with silk for more than 20 years. She 

has a master’s degree in art from Sacramento State 

University, California.

Water-Based Printmaking With Akua Inks 

Explore a new dimension of creativity with Akua inks 

in this dynamic class with Judy Just. Beginning and 

experienced artists will have an opportunity to explore 

various printmaking techniques. Mine your artistic vision 

using a wide variety of methods. These inks are easy, fun 

and safe to use, if you follow a few basic principles. Judy 

Just has been an artist and teacher for 30 years and has 

10 years of experience using Akua inks. There is no class

Repeatable Images 

Are you ready to take your art making skills to a new 

level This class will focus on a variety of safe, waterbased 

printmaking processes to make images that can 

be printed several times. We will focus on creating 

imagery combining techniques in one print. It is an

Enthusiasm and a desire to learn something new are 

the only requirements for our crafts classes. Continuing 

Education students learn new skills and make crafts to give 

as gifts or keep for themselves. If there is a supply list, it

Clay: Throwing on the Pottery Wheel 

In a friendly environment, learn the basics of how to 

use the pottery wheel to make functional pots. Learn 

everything from wedging the clay, centering on the 

wheel, to how to trim, finish and glaze your cups, mugs, 

bowls and other objects. Students are encouraged to 

repeat the class and build their skills of throwing on the

Clay Hand Building NEW! 

Explore hand-building in clay as an alternative way of 

making functional and sculptural ceramic art. Students 

learn the basic construction processes such as pinch 

pots, coils, slabs and a variety of decorative and 

finishing techniques. Individual projects are pursued

Stained-Glass 

Bring the warmth and beauty of stained-glass into your 

home with a project you will complete in seven weeks. 

Learn all the basic skills in this hands-on class that 

demystifies the art of cutting glass. This course will focus 

on the design and construction of stained glass using 

the leaded method to make a planter or terrarium. 

Simple methods of glass cutting and construction will 

be explained while you complete your project. Students 

will be expected to purchase their own materials.

Make a Pattern From a Garment 

Is your favorite garment worn out Have you found 

the perfect outfit and wish you had another just like it 

Come learn how to make a paper pattern from your 

favorite clothing without taking it apart. This course 

demonstrates tools and techniques of beginning 

pattern making. Basic sewing knowledge is required.

the past eight years, she has been teaching at SFCC and 

operating her own custom-sewing business.

Silver Jewelry Using Metal Clay 

Silver metal clay is an exciting material consisting 

of silver particles in a nontoxic binder and water. It 

looks, feels and acts like clay. When heated, the binder 

and water burn away to leave 99-percent pure silver. 

Students will practice firing with a small butane torch, 

an easy process that takes just minutes. Experienced 

artists will find this material fascinating, but no previous 

experience is needed. Leave class with finished jewelry. 

You’ll learn the basics in one day, and be able to begin 

on your own. Iliana Carrillo is a senior Art Clay instructor 

certified by Art Clay World USA and a certified artisan 

through the Precious Metal Clay National Guild.

Learn to create beaded jewelry using basic construction 

methods. The course covers general assembly using pins

Maloof-Style Rocking Chair NEW! 

Students build a rocking chair and leave with the 

finished product. Each participant is provided with 

templates to expedite the process and execute each 

step of the project. Students work on their own chair 

and have some choice about size and design. Students 

provide some of their own tools and supplies; wood 

is covered by the supply fee. John Moldovan lives and 

works with wood in Sonoma, California. A supply fee of

High-Altitude Baking 

Are your cakes not rising You are not alone. Amazing 

baker Tonya Story will share her secrets to successful 

high-altitude baking. Baking in Santa Fe’s high altitude 

means taking science into account. Learn how to adjust 

formulas and ratios between rising agents, liquids and 

dry ingredients to produce quality cakes, pastries and 

cookies that fill your home with the aroma of freshbaked 

goods. This class is perfect for beginners and 

experienced bakers. All materials are included.

Learn how to make real Danishes by hand. If Danishes

yummy in the morning is a great start to the day!

Gluten-Free Brownie and Cookie Baking 

Learn how to make fancy and yummy goodies for 

treats and snacks. Baker Mark Sciscenti will discuss the 

varieties and properties, tastes and textures of glutenfree

desserts. Students will make a shortbread cookie, a 

thumbprint cookie, a brownie and a quick bread.

Expand your basic understanding and skills developed

Tamales: Fun and Easy 

In Santa Fe, each generation teaches the next how to 

make tamales. These corn-husk wrapped treats can be 

filled with meat, cheese or vegetarian. Making tamales 

takes time and care in the kitchen and is terrific for 

getting families together. Michelle Roetzer, head of the 

Culinary Lab at SFCC, will teach newcomers and oldtimers 

how to make this terrific Latin American dish with

Screenplay Confidential 

Rick Reichman will divulge the seven major elements 

of every movie scene, turning points of the three-act 

structure, creating dynamic “film-speak,” and how to

Warm Water Yoga 

This innovative program incorporates water exercise

New Mexico allows residents to carry a concealed 

handgun with a state license. Applicants must be 

United States citizens, 21 or older, complete 15 hours

revolvers and semi-automatic pistols, safe gun handling 

and key elements of accurate pistol shooting. Serious

the terrain or sit comfortably in discussion, Southwest 

Explorations will expand your understanding of this area 

and the cultures within it. 

Alpine Ecology Off Campus 

In this field class we will examine this resilient, 

hearty and beautiful ecosystem. You’ll experience 

the fascinating habitats that cover our mountaintops 

including weather patterns and geology. The moderate 

hike (five to six miles) will also allow you to view the 

alpine/montane ecotone and the various factors that 

shape ecosystems, from mountainside to microclimate.

Geologic Exploration into the Valles 

Caldera Off Campus 

This one-day field trip will enter the Valles Caldera 

National Preserve, exploring the fascinating geologic 

story told by rock exposures inside the caldera. The 

caldera has experienced profound changes involving 

resurgent uplift, numerous volcanic eruptions, lakes 

and erosion of the rim. Our journey includes numerous 

scenic valleys inside the caldera, including Valle Grande, 

Valle San Antonio and Valle Toledo. Wildlife sightings 

are common. The $10 entry fee into the preserve is 

included in the course fee.

Survival Skills in the Wilderness Off Campus 

This workshop concentrates on essential survival skills 

in the wilderness. Students build and expand their 

mental focus, physical skills and planning for the 

outdoors. Examples are cited from real-life situations,

did not. The morning is spent in discussion on avoiding 

hazards, handling hazards, weather signs, orienting 

and attention to anxieties. After lunch, the hike will put 

newly-found knowledge and insights into practice. 






Trail Ride on Horseback Off Campus 

Trail rides offer a fun and unique way to experience New 

Mexico. During the ride, students will enjoy spectacular 

views from the base of the Sandia Mountains. 

Overlooking the Rio Grande Valley, you’ll enjoy seeing 

the Jemez Mountains in the horizon and the luminous 

New Mexico sky. Your adventure begins in Placitas, 

where knowledgeable wranglers will match you with 

the perfect horse. Bring the whole family and enjoy a 

leisurely ride in some beautiful country.

Ranch Ride Off Campus 

Join SFCC for an exciting horseback ride on a New 

Mexican ranch near Mount Taylor with Romero’s

beautiful canyons, wildlife and even some petroglyphs. 

After meeting in Bernalillo, students will carpool to the 

ranch (about 1 1/2 hour drive). Students will return to 

Bernalillo in the evening. A sack lunch is provided to eat 

on the trail. 




Intermediate Fly Fishing Off Campus 

Anglers with some experience will enjoy improving 

their skills. Students should already know their knots 

and have some experience in the stream for this class. 

Learn about ecology, casting, tactics for handling stream 

issues and finding fish. Completion of the classroom 

sessions and field trip should improve your independent 

fly fishing explorations. Instructor Toner Mitchell began

This World Heritage Site and national park hosts a 

complex of buildings that infer celestial relationships. 

This one-day journey will give you firsthand experience 

of the beauty, precision and intricacy of several Great 

Houses. We will walk through most of the architecture of 

“downtown Chaco,” as well as Una Vida. Many sites in 

the canyon align to the solar standstill, and Pueblo stories 

can provide illumination on the worldview still living in 

the stones. Students will travel in a college van. Students 

bring their own lunch, snack and plenty of water.

Hike to Cerro Grande, Overlooking the 

Valles Caldera NEW! Off Campus 

Cerro Grande is a large volcanic dome on the 

southeastern rim of the Valles Caldera. At the summit 

(10,200 ft.), there are spectacular views looking into 

the caldera and across the southern Jemez Mountains. 

The hike is moderately strenuous, climbing 1,200 feet 

in elevation, and is 4 miles round trip. There is much 

geology to discuss en route, including the volcanic 

history of the Jemez Mountains prior to the eruption 

of the Valles Caldera, and the long history of fresh 

water lakes that have existed within the caldera. Bring 

appropriate hiking gear, water, and picnic lunches – to 

be eaten at the summit of Cerro Grande.

Lead Certified Renovator, Initial 

This eight-hour course trains contractors on safe work 

practices in housing with lead-based paint and how to 

comply with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 

Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule. The course 

includes health concerns; regulations; work procedures; 

recordkeeping; and training non-certified workers. This 

training is required for any contractor who is involved in 

any construction activity that will or has the potential to 

disturb lead-based paint in housing constructed prior to 

1978 in facilities that can be occupied by children under 

the age of six or where pregnant women reside. This 

course has been approved by the EPA for the purpose 

of certification. After completion and passing the 

written exam, students will be certified per regulatory

paint; appropriately determine where to take dust

jobs in the economy. NMESA also offers supporting

Continuous, semester-long registration has begun. 

All registrations, whether online, by phone, by fax, 

by mail or in person, are being accepted now. 

Classes start throughout the semester. Find the latest 

continuing education class listings on our Web site at 

www.sfcc.edu. 

Many classes fill quickly. We recommend that you 

register no later than four working days before the 

starting date of the class. You may register for most 

classes up until the starting date, but if you delay, the 

class may either be full or canceled due to insufficient 

enrollment. Registrations cannot be accepted at classes. 

NOTE 

Classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. 

Prices and room assignments may change without 

notice. Please check the Web site for current information.

may register with an enrollment specialist by calling 

428-1270 during regular business hours: Monday, 

Wednesday, and Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.,

p.m. 

4.) In Person. Both new and returning students can 

register in Enrollment and Student Services at SFCC on 

Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 

5:30 p.m., Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., or 

Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Class FEES 

Continuing Education classes are self-sustaining, and 

class fees must cover all program expenses. Fees are 

based on an estimated minimum number of students. 

Class fees are subject to change without notice. Please 

check the Web site for current information and review 

the refund policy before registering. 

SFCC User name and password 

SFCC assigns each student a user name. You can get 

your user name by going to www.sfcc.edu and clicking 

on the link to JACK. Once there, follow the instructions 

to find your user name and password. 

REFUND POLICY 

Class fees are automatically refunded in 

full when: 

• the class or workshop is full. 

• the activity is canceled. 

• SFCC rejects the enrollment application. 

If you drop a class, your class fee is automatically 

refunded based on the following: 

Classes of three or more sessions 

• If you drop a class before the second session, the full 

class fee will be refunded. 

• If you drop a class after the second session, no refund 

will be given. 

Classes of one or two sessions 

• If you drop a class at least one day before the starting 

date, the full class fee will be refunded. 

• If you drop a class less than one day before the 

starting date, no refund will be given. 

Some classes have special refund policies. This 

information is listed in the class description. 

Please allow three to five weeks for processing a refund. 

Class CHANGES AND CANCELLATIONS 

A class will be closed when it reaches maximum 

enrollment, so register early. Classes with insufficient 

enrollment will be canceled three business days prior 

to the starting date of the class, and those registered 

will be notified of the cancellation by phone. To make 

contacting you easier, please provide day and evening 

phone numbers with your registration. Refunds will be 

processed automatically for classes canceled by SFCC. 

SFCC reserves the right to cancel any class. Class locations, 

dates, times and instructors are subject to change without 

notice.
