MSAC Welcomes Americorps Member, Liz Dodd<br />

Lisbeth Dodd is the newest addition to MSAC staff. As a<br />

Neighbor to Neighbor Americorps member (a new joint effort<br />

with Central <strong>Vermont</strong> Council on Aging), she will be working here<br />

and in the community to serve seniors in a variety <strong>of</strong> ways.<br />

Liz, as she prefers to be called, resides locally and has been<br />

a <strong>Vermont</strong>er for many years. A fairly recent member <strong>of</strong> MSAC<br />

herself, she will be assisting with Healthy Aging programming<br />

and leading some activities. As a swimmer and dancer, Liz is<br />

looking forward to furthering the movement opportunities at the<br />

Center. Does anyone have a new or gently used ping pong table to<br />

donate<br />

Liz will also be focusing on volunteer recruitment and management,<br />

and has already begun to reach out to our members to<br />

draw on their special skills and interests. She has experience in<br />

woodworking, and the Center may find itself in the coming<br />

months with plant stands, restored storage cabinets, and card tables.<br />

Stay tuned and speak up if interested!<br />

Liz has Masters degrees in Social Work and History. She<br />

worked for many years at UVM and later enjoyed a career as a<br />

clinical social worker. Experiencing the impact <strong>of</strong> life challenges,<br />

and the opportunities <strong>of</strong> aging <strong>of</strong> her family and friends, has contributed<br />

to her awareness <strong>of</strong> area, state and national resources for<br />

seniors.<br />

Liz’s sunny <strong>of</strong>fice is located in the Resource Room (back<br />

corner <strong>of</strong> MSAC) where she is looking forward to putting her experience<br />

to work through expanding the library<br />

<strong>of</strong> print and visual materials, as well as<br />

hosting partnering organizations in presentations<br />

and discussion groups on topics <strong>of</strong> interest<br />

to Center members.<br />

Help in the front <strong>of</strong>fice and with handy-person projects around the center: check for current<br />

needs or tell us about your skills!<br />

Help with making and serving food at congregate meals — currently on Tuesdays but eventually<br />

expanding to other days.<br />

Calligraphy project. If you are one <strong>of</strong> those special people who do artistic calligraphy,<br />

Special Announcement: Beginner’s Ukulele<br />

Class: Open to all adults.<br />

We have been approached by a significant number <strong>of</strong> people<br />

under the age <strong>of</strong> 50 who would like to take Bob Riggens’<br />

Beginner’s Ukulele class this Fall. I have decided to<br />

consider this an “intergenerational” class opportunity, in<br />

keeping with the growing buzz <strong>of</strong> passionate Ukulele playing<br />

that has grown out <strong>of</strong> MSAC and spilled into the greater<br />

community over the past two years. Interested people<br />

50+ will need to become members in order to register, and<br />

people under 50 will be charged $70 to register for the<br />

class (the equivalent <strong>of</strong> what it would cost a new member).<br />

Class starts Tuesday, October 2 nd , and goes 6-8 pm in<br />

the Community Room.<br />

Ongoing Ukulele group rehearsal happens Thursday nights,<br />

6-8 pm, in the same place, and they are available for performances<br />

(contact Bob Barrett).<br />

Finally, on Sunday, November 18th, there will be a special<br />

ukulele workshop and concert by Lil’ Rev, an accomplished<br />

folk musician with whom some <strong>of</strong> our uke players<br />

spent time last fall, so save the date! – Janna<br />

OSHER Lifelong Learning<br />

On October 3rd, Poet Ellen Bryant Voight will present “Truth Set to<br />

Music: The Interwoven Arts <strong>of</strong> Poetry.” A poet and teacher, Ms.<br />

Voght was Poet Laureate <strong>of</strong> VT. She is the author <strong>of</strong> numerous poetry<br />

collections.<br />

The series continues through the fall and early winter. The session<br />

described above will begin at 1:30 at the <strong>Montpelier</strong> Senior Activity<br />

Center. All are welcome to arrive any time after 12:30 for a brown-bag<br />

lunch. These sessions during October will meet at the Aldrich Library in<br />

Barre, and then Osher returns to MSAC in November.<br />

MSAC joins organizations and schools around the country for<br />

“Mix it Up at Lunch Day” on Tuesday,<br />

October 30th. Meet someone new and discover ways to<br />

find common ground as we gather for a Pie Luncheon in the<br />

beautiful and bright community room. Mix it Up in a friendly atmosphere.<br />

Band starts at 11:00, lunch and discussion goes 12:00<br />

to 1:00, followed by more music and dancing. The day is designed<br />

to focus on understanding what separates us and keeps us<br />

from getting to know others. Initiated by MSAC member and volunteer<br />

instructor Liz Snell, who has been inspired by<br />

www.tolerance.org. Let us know if you’d like to bring a pie –<br />

pizza, quiche, or dessert. Salad, fresh fruit and beverages will also<br />

A new project will bring seniors and teens together,<br />

starting in November with an intergenerational dinner at<br />

MSAC (tentatively scheduled for Friday, November 30 th ,<br />

at 5:30 pm), continuing weekends in December with<br />

downtown oral history interviews and photo-portraits both<br />

spontaneous and scheduled (based out <strong>of</strong> <strong>City</strong> Hall and<br />

other locations), getting edited in January, and finally debuting<br />

as a public exhibit at MSAC during Art Walk on<br />

Friday, February 1 st , which will also be the kick-<strong>of</strong>f event<br />

for <strong>Montpelier</strong>’s new winter festival.<br />

Voices <strong>of</strong> <strong>Montpelier</strong> is conceived and facilitated by<br />

experienced historian and educator, Sarah Adelman, and<br />

supported by <strong>Montpelier</strong> Alive, the <strong>Montpelier</strong> Teen Center,<br />

and MSAC. Keep an eye out in October for a<br />

“Kickstarter” fundraising campaign for the project online,<br />

too.<br />

Slide Show and Talk: A Second Bhutan Visit by Tina Muncy<br />

Thursday, November 8, 2012- 7:00PM<br />

Bhutan is a country where buying cigarettes is illegal, the rice is red<br />

and chillies aren’t just a seasoning but the entire dish. It’s also a<br />

deeply Buddhist land, where men wear a tunic to work and where<br />

Gross National Happiness is deemed more important than Gross<br />

National Product. Visitors famously have to pay a minimum <strong>of</strong> US<br />

$200 per day, making it one <strong>of</strong> the world’s most expensive countries<br />

to visit. Tina Muncy went back for a second visit to Bhutan<br />

this spring at the invitation <strong>of</strong> the Ministry <strong>of</strong> Education to train<br />

principals and teachers. Her faithful group <strong>of</strong> supporters has asked<br />

if she would do a second show <strong>of</strong> pictures from this visit. So she<br />

will combine some <strong>of</strong> the introduction to Bhutan from last time<br />

with new pictures and stories. Please join us.<br />

Thank you to Thierry Guerlain for his willingness to be<br />

appointed as the new <strong>City</strong> Council representative to the<br />

MSAC Advisory Board. Thierry and his wife recently<br />

joined MSAC as members, and his perspective and experience<br />

will be assets to MSAC. He has also generously<br />

donated to our scholarship fund ($600) and has<br />

volunteered to lead a Fall class at MSAC: “How to use<br />

your iPhone.”<br />

Thank you to Steve Ribolini <strong>of</strong> S&R Services for his<br />

generous donation <strong>of</strong> storage space after the fire, which<br />

we have finally emptied!<br />

Thank you to George Gerundo, MSAC volunteer, for<br />

his continuously happy willingness to do such tasks as<br />

removing salvage metal and sanding down our kitchen<br />

baker’s table for refinishing.<br />
