STATE MANAGER’S MESSAGE:
Welcome to another edition of the Queensland Active
After-school Community (AASC) State Newsletter. As I
reflect on the last six months I am amazed at how
much has happened. One of the highlights, of course
was the favourable announcement to extend the AASC
program. Shortly after, the Queensland team came
together on the Sunshine Coast for a very positive and
productive State Conference. This gave all of us the
opportunity to plan, engage and learn from our fellow
colleagues and invited guests.
The team started the year with renewed energy only to be faced with both the
floods and cyclone affecting a number of AASC communities. Whilst the impact
was widespread and hard-hitting the recovery was surprisingly quick (in most
areas), thanks to the amazing contribution of so many individuals and teams.
Unfortunately the hardest hit areas still have a long way to go. All up ten AASC
sites were affected in some way; however only two sites deferred for the term.
Through our Special Initiative Grants three of our sites were able to replace their
sporting equipment that had been lost in the floods. The dedicated AASC staff are
still working with sites that need support.
State Sporting Organisations (SSOs) - watch this space for all the exciting
initiatives happening in our program to help connect our AASC children with your
clubs in local regions across the state. We held a successful Strategy Workshop
recently for internal staff who will become new partnership managers. We now
have a number of successful case studies that highlight the success of our
pathways for children from our program into clubs. One of the major successes for
this was the inaugural Play for Life – Join a Sporting Club campaign that was
launched by Johanna Griggs in term 3, 2010. We have continued the Join a
Sporting Club activity/theme in 2011 on a smaller scale in a number of local
communities and some large scale events in partnership with other key players. It
is great to see some of these events involving partnerships across local, state and
federal governments as well as the not for profit sector. Please see my special note
on the new coach fee payments on page five.
This edition highlights some great work going on across the state, enjoy!
Basketball club gets new members
On Saturday the 12 February, Sunshine Coast Regional Coordinators Michelle
Downs and Jenna van Heerden assisted the Noosa Basketball Club to run a „Come
and Try‟ session for AASC participants at the Noosa Leisure Centre. The event was
a great success, with approximately 30 children taking part in the activities and
games provided by CCTP qualified Noosa Basketball coaches. Club representative
Wendy Hunt was extremely positive about the outcomes of the afternoon. „We have
five new members signed up, with another six indicating they will be coming on
board and just need to get their paperwork in. It was fantastic to have the Australian
Sports Commissions support in this initiative.‟
Noosa Basketball Club came on as an AASC organisation in 2010 when three
members completed their CCTP accreditation. Since that time, the club has
participated in AASC Community Coach Professional Development sessions,
become a popular AASC deliverer at Good Shepherd Lutheran College in
Noosaville and been the recipient of two SIGS, one for equipment to use when
coaching at AASC Sites and a second to run the “Come and Try” session. A great
example of how AASC involvement can provide pathways for participants and help
clubs increase their junior membership and coaching capacities!
Bulldogs hungry for new members
In North Queensland, over one hundred children had a great afternoon at the
Centrals Bulldogs Junior AFL Club at Trinity Beach, Cairns on Thursday 17
February. Pupils from Holy Cross, Yorkeys Knob and Peace Lutheran College
enjoyed the kicking and handballing games, followed by a free BBQ and
refreshments provided by the club. All the participants were given a „free‟
membership and sign on information and now Bulldogs are planning to deliver
more school visits to encourage the boys and girls to return and join the club.
Football Club helps to integrate children with special needs into club
AASC affiliated organisation Maroochydore Football Club initiated a series of
soccer clinics for children with special needs in Term 4, 2010. After an extremely
positive response from participants and parents, Maroochydore re-launched the
clinics in Term 1, 2011 and doubled their participant numbers from nine to eighteen
children. The clinics were the idea of Maroochydore Club Coach Tim Sheridan.
After Tim completed his CCTP in early 2010, he attended an AASC professional
development session where he was inspired by a presentation by special education
expert Dale Lanini. Tim created these clinics to provide a pathway into organised
sport for AASC participants with special needs, particularly children from AASC
Sunshine Coast sites Nambour Special School (where Tim delivers the AASC
sessions) and Currimundi Special School, as often these children do not get a
chance to transition into regular community sport. „We have had such fantastic
feedback on the clinics from parents, teachers and children and are hoping to
continue running them each term. We have been able to integrate some of the
children who have attended clinics into the mainstream team for their age group
which is just great,‟ Tim reports.
COMMUNITY COACH UPDATE
Gold Coast Coaches Get Active in Workshops
February saw the first of a series of Coach Development Workshops hosted on the
Gold Coast. The first session „How & When to Change IT‟ took place at the Gold
Coast PCYC on a very warm Sunday morning. Rob Quinnell (Gold Coast) and
Martin Grose (Toowoomba) delivered a practical workshop on how to implement
the „AASC Change IT‟ philosophy for best advantage. All agreed that the session
was very valuable in how best to make the changes to increase the enjoyment and
activity levels of children participating in AASC sessions.
„A different way of looking at disability, games and motor activity‟ was held on 10
March at the Varsity Lakes Office. Dale Lanini, an education advisor from the
Sunshine Coast delivered a practical workshop looking at inclusiveness of all
children into AASC sessions. Everyone left with a better understanding of disability
in sport and the fundamental motor activity involved in an activity.
The South Queensland regional coordinators and coaches attended the Behaviour
Management workshop on 28 March. Peter Melrose director of Third Circle
Consulting and Support Services and social worker provided a very interesting and
informative session on supporting children with behaviour difficulties. The session
looked at turning theory into practice and how as coaches we can understand and
manage difficult behaviours.
NEWS IN BRIEF
As school children return to school, after-school sport is still open for
play
Bundamba Outside School Care (OSC) situated at Bundamba State School in
Ipswich suffered major damage in the January floods. A large amount of the
centre‟s resources and sporting equipment was lost or damaged, but a combined
effort from AASC staff and community members ensured that Bundamba students
will be able to participate in the AASC program this term, which will including
martial arts and other structured physical activities.
Greg Fox, the acting Regional Coordinator for the AASC Brisbane Outer West
Region, said staff were in a race against time to be ready for the start of the school
year on Monday 24 January 2011.
„Bundamba currently has 45 children in the AASC activities,‟ Greg said. „It was
vitally important to us that we have the program back up and running in order to
provide a sense of routine and normalcy for the community.
„I received donations of stationery supplies and used sporting equipment from my
community contacts. They were able to re-commence operations on the 24
January, an impressive effort given the amount of flood damage that hit the school
and surrounding community.
Important information about the new Coach Fees
One of the major challenges facing the program and staff is the change to our
coach costs. After a significant review of all coach costs across Australia it was
found many coaches were charging rates which were in excess of the highest
grade included in the National Sporting Organisation Award 2010.
The focus for us is reducing excessive fees as the current arrangement is
unsustainable and inappropriate given the community nature of our program. In
order for the AASC program to continue to achieve its outcomes efficiently and
effectively it is essential that coach costs move more into line with what is
appropriate for AASC - a free physical activity „introductory‟ program for primary
school aged children.
We hope sites that benefit from any savings can put this towards equipment and
other resources to support the program and that clubs, sporting organisations and
private providers can continue to utilise the AASC program as a vehicle to engage
new participants to their club, sport and/or business.
The children, staff and parents at Caboolture Montessori School have been
getting into the community spirit of the Active After-school Communities
Program. The school located on the outskirts of Caboolture manages to attract
the majority of the children to participate in the program. First accepted into the
program in 2008 the school has developed their program so it now attracts over
30 children to each session and to keep up with demand the school has plans to
expand their program to three days a week in semester two this year. The
program is managed by the school‟s Principal, Ms Yvonne Rinaldi who made
the following comments about the program:
‘I would like to formally thank the Australian Government for offering this
program to our school and to all the children that now participate in healthy
