Effects: It usually thrives in disturbed areas like open
fields, and roadsides, preventing natives from returning
to the area. In unshaded areas it crowds out native
grasses forming vast swaths where it is the only species
present. It dies early in the season and can present a
fire hazard where abundant because it becomes so dry.

Distinctive features: Typically a short grass, it has
distinctively hairy leaves which turn rusty-red to purple
at maturity, then fade to a straw color as the plant dies.
It also recognized from its generally hairy leaves and
particularly by a dense cluster of hairs that form near
where the leaf joins the stem. The flowering stems can
grow to more than a foot tall, though shorter forms are
common. The seed heads tend to droop slightly and the
plant has an overall “wispy”, delicate appearance.
Status: Exotic.

Distinctive features: Its grass-like leaves are rolled
when young, and may reach 16 inches long and ¾ inch in
width when mature. Leaf blades have many short hairs
on the upper surface and along the margins. The seed
head is cylindrical, with 1-3 straight bristles emerging
from each seed, giving the seed head a “furry”
appearance. The seed head has a characteristic “droop”
when it is mature. The hairy leaves and drooping seed
head help distinguish this plant from other similar
foxtails.
