Romania<br />

Romania covers almost 238,000 km 2 <strong>in</strong> south <strong>eastern</strong> Europe <strong>and</strong><br />

has five biogeographic zones, the Cont<strong>in</strong>ental, Pannonian,Alp<strong>in</strong>e,<br />

Steppic <strong>and</strong> Black Sea. The diversity of biogeographic zones<br />

matches the diversity of <strong>plant</strong> species <strong>and</strong> habitats from the<br />

Carpathian Mounta<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> the north, to the steppic grassl<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong><br />

wetl<strong>and</strong> <strong>areas</strong> of the Danube Delta <strong>in</strong> the south. Romania has<br />

two Centres of Plant Diversity, the Carpathians <strong>and</strong> the Danube<br />

Delta. Protected <strong>areas</strong> with botanical importance cover about 5%<br />

of the Romanian territory. Romania is set to accede to the EU <strong>in</strong><br />

2007 <strong>and</strong> is also a member of the Council of Europe.<br />
