<strong>and</strong> has two biogeographical zones: the Cont<strong>in</strong>ental, which<br />
covers most of the country <strong>and</strong> a small area of the Alp<strong>in</strong>e zone<br />
<strong>in</strong> the Carparthian Mounta<strong>in</strong>s of the south. Pol<strong>and</strong>’s natural <strong>and</strong><br />

steppe-like grassl<strong>and</strong>, as well as vast <strong>areas</strong> of swamps <strong>and</strong> peat<br />
bogs. The country also harbours two Centres of Plant Diversity,<br />
the Carpathians <strong>and</strong> the Bial ⁄ owiez·a Forest. Pol<strong>and</strong> jo<strong>in</strong>ed the EU<br />

Pol<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> Slovakia <strong>and</strong> the highest arc <strong>in</strong><br />
the Carpathians, are an exceptional area<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>central</strong> Europe for geological, climatic<br />
<strong>and</strong> biological diversity.They conta<strong>in</strong> 28<br />
habitat types <strong>and</strong> seven species of<br />
European importance, several endemic<br />
<strong>and</strong> sub-endemic species <strong>and</strong> <strong>plant</strong><br />
associations, <strong>and</strong> are nationally <strong>important</strong><br />
because they conta<strong>in</strong> the only site <strong>in</strong><br />
