I’ve been waiting all season to welcome you to our exciting 

production of Broadway’s sensational Buddy–The Buddy 

Holly Story! More than 20 million people world-wide have 

cheered along to the amazing true story of this rock ‘n’ roll 

legend and tonight you will too. By the end of this 

performance, you’ll be dancing in the aisles! 

The excitement continues through our 204th season, a season 

of love. I’ve selected three spectacular musicals, a classic 

comedy and an exciting drama that I know you’ll love. The 

2012–2013 season will begin with the American premiere of 

Love Story, the musical (September 4–October 21). Inspired 

by Erich Segal’s best-selling iconic novel, and one of the most 

romantic films of all time, this life-affirming musical will have 

us all remembering the first time we fell in love. It’s a lovely 

way to start a new season!

This holiday season, you’ll have 76 reasons to share the gift of live theatre with your family and 

friends, beginning with Jeffrey Coon as con-man Harold Hill in Meredith Willson’s The Music 

Man (November 6–January 6). I know I’m looking forward to seeing the show-stopping “Seventy- 

Six Trombones” in this all-American musical with my family and I hope you share the excitement 

with your loved ones too! 

Our season continues with Oscar Wilde’s classic comedy An Ideal Husband (January 15–March 3). 

This wonderfully witty story of romance, insider trading and scandal is quite timely. As the story 

unfolds, it’s revealed that the man thought to be perfect is flawed, the man with all the flaws must 

do something right, and the question remains: what makes An Ideal Husband 

I look forward to directing the Philadelphia premiere of the new hit play Good People (March 

12–April 28). This play is beautifully written by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author, David Lindsay- 

Abaire. Set in a Boston neighborhood with hard working people trying to make ends meet, the story 

is about people who succeed and the Good People that help them do it. I am sure you’ll love this 

play as much as I do. 

Our “electrifyin’” season finale will have you singing “A-wop-bop-a-loo-bop! A-wop-bamboom!” 

The all-new production of the Broadway and Hollywood smash-hit Grease (May 14–July 

14) will feature the unforgettable songs from the movie, including “You’re The One That I Want,” 

“Grease,” “Summer Nights,” “Greased Lightnin’” and many more. Start practicing the hand-jive 

and get ready for this musical extravaganza on stage!

her fears in this super funny and poignant musical.

Closing the WST for Kids

most animated elementary 

school student, Ramona 

Quimby. Ramona, the 

exasperating but lovable 

third-grader, feels her life 

is a mess. Her older sister 

Beezus is a pain, her Aunt 

Bea may marry a dork, 

and her Dad lost his job. 

Ramona faces these challenges 

as audiences laugh 

and cheer her on! 

The WST for Kids’ original, annual production of 

Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol returns next holiday 

season! Enjoy this classic story with the entire 

family as old Scrooge discovers what it truly means 

to be merry! 

WST for Kids’ production of Alexander and the 

Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day is a 

totally awesome musical that is sure to tickle your 

funny bone. Alexander wakes up with gum in his 

hair, his best friend abandons him on the playground 

and his mom forgets to put dessert in his lunch box.

BUDDY HOLLY (Music) Charles Hardin 

Holley (September 7, 1936 – February 3, 1959), 

better known as Buddy Holly, was an American 

singer, songwriter, and a pioneer of Rock and 

Roll. Born in Lubbock, Texas, Holly’s first performed 

as part of a duo, Buddy and Bob in the 

fall of 1949. Holly later formed his own band, 

The Crickets, and began making records at 

Norman Petty’s studios in Clovis, New Mexico. 

Holly was an influential lead and rhythm guitarist, 

notably on songs such as “Peggy Sue” and 

“Not Fade Away.” His work influenced many 

artists, including The Beatles, whose name was 

chosen partly in homage to Holly’s Crickets. In 

1959, Holly split with the Crickets and began a 

solo tour with other notable performers including 

Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson, “The Big 

Bopper.” Following a performance at the Surf 

Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, Holly was killed 


in a plane crash along with Valens, Richardson, 

and pilot Roger Peterson. The tragic plane crash 

inspired singer Don McLean’s popular 1971 

ballad “American Pie,” and immortalized 

February 3rd as “The Day The Music Died.” 

Contrary to popular myth, “American Pie” was 

not the name of the ill-fated airplane. 

ALAN JANES (Author) has been a full-time 

writer since 1973, when a stage play he wrote 

was adapted for TV. Since then, he has written 

extensively for radio, TV and film. In 1989, 

Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story, written by Alan, 

was presented in the West End and ran for 13 

years. The show has enjoyed worldwide success, 

including playing Broadway, Sweden, South 

Africa, Japan, Germany, Holland, Singapore, 

Finland, Austria and Denmark. Alan was nominated 

for an Olivier Award for Best Musical. 

CASEY HUSHION (Direction/ Choreography) 

is the Artistic Director of North Carolina 

Theatre, where she has directed 20 productions.

DEBI MARCUCCI (Stage Manager/ 

Assistant Director) has worked her way up 

through the ranks here at WST over the past 20 

years and is now in her 14th season serving as 

Mainstage SM. As a director, she’s recently 

directed the musical No Way To Treat A Lady 

(Alpine Theatre Project), as well as The Ugly 

One, Lobby Hero and Mr. Bailey’s Minder 

(WST’s Studio 3). Debi is thrilled to be the SM 

and Assistant Director on Buddy, having done 

our first production of Buddy here in 1999.

JOEL MARKUS (Production Manager) 

Credits include 10 seasons at the Indiana 

Repertory Theatre; Geva Theatre Center in 

Rochester, NY; the Weston Playhouse in 

Vermont; American Players Theatre in Spring 

Green, Wisconsin; and North Shore Music 

Theatre in Beverly, Massachusetts. Joel is a 

graduate of Indiana University and is originally 

from Miami, Florida. 

MARK D. SYLVESTER (Managing Director) 

Mark’s extensive career has spanned Summer 

Stock to Broadway as an actor, stage manager, 

box office treasurer, theatre manager, marketing 

and public relations director and general manager. 

This season he is celebrating his 18th 

season at the Walnut. At the age of 21 he managed 

his first theatre, New York’s historic 

Provincetown Playhouse. Mark spent several 

years working with commercial theatre. Since 

1987, he has devoted his career to non-profit theatre 

companies including six seasons at Miami’s 

Coconut Grove Playhouse. To date, Mark has

been associated with more than 400 stage productions. 

An avid collector of musical theatre 

recordings, his collection contains nearly 3,000 

cast albums from around the world. Widely 

regarded as a theatrical marketing expert, Mark 

lectures and consults with organizations internationally. 

He has served on many boards 

including the Theatre League of South Florida, 

Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia, the 

National Alliance for Musical Theatre and the 

Advisory Committee of Samuel French. With 

Bernard Havard he co-authored the book Walnut 

Street Theatre, published by Arcadia Publishing. 

Since he joined the Walnut in 1994, it has 

become the most subscribed theatre company in 

the world. 

BERNARD HAVARD (President and 

Producing Artistic Director) Vox Populi (The 

Voice of the People) was written on the Walnut 

Playbills in the 1800s. Whenever the Walnut has 

strayed from a populist program, the theatre has 

gone bankrupt. When I came here 29 years ago, 

we had no programs and no audience. Today we 

enjoy the largest subscription of any theatre in 

the world. So, my thanks to our loyal audience 

and a warm welcome to newcomers who enjoy 

and believe in what we do. I have tremendous 

admiration for the artists who have dedicated 

their lives to the theatre and the Walnut, in particular. 

Our theatre is a non-profit 501-C3 institution 

and we rely on contributed income to 

extend our reach into the community. Last 

season we reached more than 110,000 students 

in our city schools. We have 40 trustees who 

give their time, wisdom and contributions to 

help guide this historical treasure. I came to the 

Walnut in 1982, and I am as excited now about 

our future as I was in the beginning. My heartfelt 

thanks to all who enter this theatre. For my
