How You Can Enjoy the Benefits of Stem Cells from Your Own Fat

at is finally making it to the
big time. Or at least this appeared
to be true as Mr Kripa
Krishnan began his talk
about fat stem cells and how they
can be used to alleviate signs of aging,
better manage diseases and
lead to some other amazing results.
He began his informative talk to an
appreciative group by explaining that
the reason fat cells are being used is
that they are so rich in stored,
dormant stem cells that can be harvested,
separated, activated and
then returned to the body via an intravenous
drip.
While the details and information regarding
the process and how it is
completed are fascinating, it was the
potential benefits I find interesting.
This was highlighted by the fact that
as harvested cells are ours, and not
from embryonic matter, moral and
ethical issues were avoided as were
fears the body would reject them and
the absence of any side effects.
So far so good,
as we all have
200 cc of fat we
can afford to
donate to science,
all of
us, or at
least most
of us, have
various
markers of
aging we
would just as
soon see the
end of, and finally,
as the cost,
while perhaps a bit high, certainly
could be manageable.
Lose a bit of fat; spend four hours in
a hospital and come out with a stemcell
count of someone in their teens,
sounds delightful, but why
First, the procedure has and continues
to demonstrate in research that
it helps to alleviate chronic ailments
and diseases.
Of particular interest were Kripa’s
comments about how treatments
could help with cartilage, a particular
difficult part of the body to repair or
heal if damaged. He also mentioned
success with Type 2 diabetes, including
cases were it was brought
back to normal.
Second, in cosmetic terms, he
showed pictures that clearly demonstrated
the anti-aging aspects of the
treatment; including the reduction of
acne scaring.
Finally, what I found particularly interesting
was its potential to help
with autism as fat stem cells had the
ability to affect changes in the brain
other treatments cannot.
All-in-all, it was an interesting and informative
talk. I believe most of us
now have a basic understanding of
how it works; an optimistic, although
cautious outlook on how fat stem
cells could be employed; and finally,
an insight into a scientific advancement
that could help many of us enjoy
improved health and well-being.

n 27 May, Sunday, District will organize
one of the most misnamed
events on the Rotary Calendar:
“District Assembly.”
The name takes some if us back to our
school days, when “assemblies” were
hours on end of boring school administrators
talking down to students uncomfortably
stuffed into the gym – as many
year groups as could be managed, in order
to minimize the number of times administrators
would have to repeat themselves.
We also had assemblies in the military during
my training. These assemblies were no less boring
than the ones in my high school days, yet we young
airmen cherished them as a break from the ceaseless
mind- and body-numbing pummeling that kept
us continually on the brink of total exhaustion.
Still others who hear “assembly” are reminded of
that most staid of staid organizations, the United
Nations, where the General Assembly's 191
member states go out of their way to be
obstructive and unhelpful to the collective
good with the result that the organization
is powerless when it comes to improving
the plight of the disadvantaged, the very
constituency the U.N. claims to empower.
Of course, none of these assemblies
bears the slightest resemblance to a
District Assembly.
The Rotary context of “assembly” is a reference
to assembling – think honing and
aligning, as one might the pieces of a model
airplane – the club leadership teams for the coming
year. Most Rotarians assume the District Assembly
target group to be the incoming leadership, those
who will hold board and committee positions.
And it is true that we organize the Assembly
program around the structure recommended
for the average club.
On the other hand, these incoming leaders
are already well versed in Rotary –
how else did they get their positions in
the first place They may benefit from
updating their understanding (rules do
change, as does practice, over time) and
they most certainly will benefit from exchanging
ideas with colleagues from other
clubs around the District.
But to my mind, the Rotarians who stand to
gain the most from the District Assembly experience
are those who have recently – say over the past six
months to two years – joined the Rotary family.
These “young” Rotarians have just begun to appreciate
the Rotary adventure. They are beginning to
sense the energy of an organization that is driven by
the ideals of international understanding and peace,
and they are probably wondering why and how
things work the way they do. This puts them in
a receptive frame of mind to benefit from the
sharing that takes place at District Assembly.
Suitably disposed, attending District Assembly
can be a revelation. It can even
spark the consciousness-raising journey
you will sometimes hear Rotarians refer to,
the epiphany that transforms us from Rotary
club members into Rotarians!
There will be a separate celebration in the
evening, the Installation of the new District
Governor for the Rotary Year beginning 1 July
2012. This year will be historic in that for the first
time in the long history of District 3350 the Governor
will be a foreigner, our own Alex Mavro.
