<strong>Current</strong> <strong>uses</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cellular</strong> <strong>Therapy</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Cosmetic</strong> <strong>and</strong> Medical Applications<br />

How You Can Enjoy the Benefits <strong>of</strong> Stem Cells from Your Own Fat<br />

F<br />

at is f<strong>in</strong>ally mak<strong>in</strong>g it to the<br />

big time. Or at least this appeared<br />

to be true as Mr <strong>Kripa</strong><br />

<strong>Krishnan</strong> began his talk<br />

about fat stem cells <strong>and</strong> how they<br />

can be used to alleviate signs <strong>of</strong> ag<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

better manage diseases <strong>and</strong><br />

lead to some other amaz<strong>in</strong>g results.<br />

He began his <strong>in</strong>formative talk to an<br />

appreciative group by expla<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g that<br />

the reason fat cells are be<strong>in</strong>g used is<br />

that they are so rich <strong>in</strong> stored,<br />

dormant stem cells that can be harvested,<br />

separated, activated <strong>and</strong><br />

then returned to the body via an <strong>in</strong>travenous<br />

drip.<br />

While the details <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation regard<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the process <strong>and</strong> how it is<br />

completed are fasc<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g, it was the<br />

potential benefits I f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

This was highlighted by the fact that<br />

as harvested cells are ours, <strong>and</strong> not<br />

from embryonic matter, moral <strong>and</strong><br />

ethical issues were avoided as were<br />

fears the body would reject them <strong>and</strong><br />

the absence <strong>of</strong> any side effects.<br />

So far so good,<br />

as we all have<br />

200 cc <strong>of</strong> fat we<br />

can afford to<br />

donate to science,<br />

all <strong>of</strong><br />

us, or at<br />

least most<br />

<strong>of</strong> us, have<br />

various<br />

markers <strong>of</strong><br />

ag<strong>in</strong>g we<br />

would just as<br />

soon see the<br />

end <strong>of</strong>, <strong>and</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ally,<br />

as the cost,<br />

while perhaps a bit high, certa<strong>in</strong>ly<br />

could be manageable.<br />

Lose a bit <strong>of</strong> fat; spend four hours <strong>in</strong><br />

a hospital <strong>and</strong> come out with a stemcell<br />

count <strong>of</strong> someone <strong>in</strong> their teens,<br />

sounds delightful, but why<br />

First, the procedure has <strong>and</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ues<br />

to demonstrate <strong>in</strong> research that<br />

it helps to alleviate chronic ailments<br />

<strong>and</strong> diseases.<br />

Of particular <strong>in</strong>terest were <strong>Kripa</strong>’s<br />

comments about how treatments<br />

could help with cartilage, a particular<br />

difficult part <strong>of</strong> the body to repair or<br />

heal if damaged. He also mentioned<br />

success with Type 2 diabetes, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

cases were it was brought<br />

back to normal.<br />

Second, <strong>in</strong> cosmetic terms, he<br />

showed pictures that clearly demonstrated<br />

the anti-ag<strong>in</strong>g aspects <strong>of</strong> the<br />

treatment; <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the reduction <strong>of</strong><br />

acne scar<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ally, what I found particularly <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g<br />

was its potential to help<br />

with autism as fat stem cells had the<br />

ability to affect changes <strong>in</strong> the bra<strong>in</strong><br />

other treatments cannot.<br />

All-<strong>in</strong>-all, it was an <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>formative<br />

talk. I believe most <strong>of</strong> us<br />

now have a basic underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />

how it works; an optimistic, although<br />

cautious outlook on how fat stem<br />

cells could be employed; <strong>and</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ally,<br />

an <strong>in</strong>sight <strong>in</strong>to a scientific advancement<br />

that could help many <strong>of</strong> us enjoy<br />

improved health <strong>and</strong> well-be<strong>in</strong>g.

District Assembly <strong>and</strong> DGE Alex Mavro Installation<br />

Sunday, 27 May 2012<br />

O<br />

n 27 May, Sunday, District will organize<br />

one <strong>of</strong> the most misnamed<br />

events on the Rotary Calendar:<br />

“District Assembly.”<br />

The name takes some if us back to our<br />

school days, when “assemblies” were<br />

hours on end <strong>of</strong> bor<strong>in</strong>g school adm<strong>in</strong>istrators<br />

talk<strong>in</strong>g down to students uncomfortably<br />

stuffed <strong>in</strong>to the gym – as many<br />

year groups as could be managed, <strong>in</strong> order<br />

to m<strong>in</strong>imize the number <strong>of</strong> times adm<strong>in</strong>istrators<br />

would have to repeat themselves.<br />

We also had assemblies <strong>in</strong> the military dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

my tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. These assemblies were no less bor<strong>in</strong>g<br />

than the ones <strong>in</strong> my high school days, yet we young<br />

airmen cherished them as a break from the ceaseless<br />

m<strong>in</strong>d- <strong>and</strong> body-numb<strong>in</strong>g pummel<strong>in</strong>g that kept<br />

us cont<strong>in</strong>ually on the br<strong>in</strong>k <strong>of</strong> total exhaustion.<br />

Still others who hear “assembly” are rem<strong>in</strong>ded <strong>of</strong><br />

that most staid <strong>of</strong> staid organizations, the United<br />

Nations, where the General Assembly's 191<br />

member states go out <strong>of</strong> their way to be<br />

obstructive <strong>and</strong> unhelpful to the collective<br />

good with the result that the organization<br />

is powerless when it comes to improv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the plight <strong>of</strong> the disadvantaged, the very<br />

constituency the U.N. claims to empower.<br />

Of course, none <strong>of</strong> these assemblies<br />

bears the slightest resemblance to a<br />

District Assembly.<br />

The Rotary context <strong>of</strong> “assembly” is a reference<br />

to assembl<strong>in</strong>g – th<strong>in</strong>k hon<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

align<strong>in</strong>g, as one might the pieces <strong>of</strong> a model<br />

airplane – the club leadership teams for the com<strong>in</strong>g<br />

year. Most Rotarians assume the District Assembly<br />

target group to be the <strong>in</strong>com<strong>in</strong>g leadership, those<br />

who will hold board <strong>and</strong> committee positions.<br />

And it is true that we organize the Assembly<br />

program around the structure recommended<br />

for the average club.<br />

On the other h<strong>and</strong>, these <strong>in</strong>com<strong>in</strong>g leaders<br />

are already well versed <strong>in</strong> Rotary –<br />

how else did they get their positions <strong>in</strong><br />

the first place They may benefit from<br />

updat<strong>in</strong>g their underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g (rules do<br />

change, as does practice, over time) <strong>and</strong><br />

they most certa<strong>in</strong>ly will benefit from exchang<strong>in</strong>g<br />

ideas with colleagues from other<br />

clubs around the District.<br />

But to my m<strong>in</strong>d, the Rotarians who st<strong>and</strong> to<br />

ga<strong>in</strong> the most from the District Assembly experience<br />

are those who have recently – say over the past six<br />

months to two years – jo<strong>in</strong>ed the Rotary family.<br />

These “young” Rotarians have just begun to appreciate<br />

the Rotary adventure. They are beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

sense the energy <strong>of</strong> an organization that is driven by<br />

the ideals <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> peace,<br />

<strong>and</strong> they are probably wonder<strong>in</strong>g why <strong>and</strong> how<br />

th<strong>in</strong>gs work the way they do. This puts them <strong>in</strong><br />

a receptive frame <strong>of</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d to benefit from the<br />

shar<strong>in</strong>g that takes place at District Assembly.<br />

Suitably disposed, attend<strong>in</strong>g District Assembly<br />

can be a revelation. It can even<br />

spark the consciousness-rais<strong>in</strong>g journey<br />

you will sometimes hear Rotarians refer to,<br />

the epiphany that transforms us from Rotary<br />

club members <strong>in</strong>to Rotarians!<br />

There will be a separate celebration <strong>in</strong> the<br />

even<strong>in</strong>g, the Installation <strong>of</strong> the new District<br />

Governor for the Rotary Year beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g 1 July<br />

2012. This year will be historic <strong>in</strong> that for the first<br />

time <strong>in</strong> the long history <strong>of</strong> District 3350 the Governor<br />

will be a foreigner, our own Alex Mavro.
