Honorary Doctor <strong>of</strong> Laws<br />
HAROLD (HAL) EDMUND WYATT<br />
Harold Edmund Wyatt was born and<br />
educated in Moose Jaw, <strong>Saskatchewan</strong>.<br />
He served with the RCAF as a pilot<br />
for four and a half years during World<br />
War II, retiring with the rank <strong>of</strong> Flight<br />
Lieutenant.<br />
Mr. Wyatt has enjoyed a long and<br />
influential career in Canadian business<br />
ventures and volunteered time and<br />
energy to the many communities in<br />
which he has lived. He was a career<br />
banker with the Royal Bank <strong>of</strong> Canada,<br />
retiring in 1986 as Vice-Chairman<br />
and Director. He was also Chairman<br />
<strong>of</strong> Monsanto Canada Inc. and Liquid<br />
Carbonic Inc., Deputy Chairman <strong>of</strong><br />
Talisman Energy Inc. (formerly BP<br />
Canada Inc.) and National Mutual<br />
Royal Bank (Australia) and Capel Court<br />
(Australia). In addition, Mr. Wyatt has<br />
served as a director for a multitude <strong>of</strong><br />
institutions including Albert College,<br />
Concordia <strong>University</strong> and Banff School<br />
<strong>of</strong> Management. He also chaired the<br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Calgary fundraising<br />
drive for their business school then<br />
known as Scurfield Hall. As Chairman<br />
and Governor <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Saskatchewan</strong>, he chaired many <strong>of</strong> its<br />
committees and was the <strong>University</strong>’s<br />
representative on the Collaborative<br />
Committee <strong>of</strong> the Canadian Light<br />
Source Project.<br />
Hal Wyatt has always been a driving<br />
force within every institution to<br />
which he has committed his time and<br />
considerable talents, and is highly<br />
regarded as an involved and effective<br />
business leader in philanthropic<br />
work. In Calgary he currently serves<br />
as Chairman Emeritus <strong>of</strong> the Mount<br />
Royal College Foundation, founding<br />
Chairman <strong>of</strong> the Calgary International<br />
Organ Festival, Chairman <strong>of</strong> The Stan<br />
Waters Memorial Foundation, Director<br />
<strong>of</strong> Cantos Music Foundation and he is<br />
a former Director <strong>of</strong> the Esther Honens<br />
International Piano Competition. As<br />
Governor and Vice-Chairman <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Council <strong>of</strong> Canadian Unity, Mr. Wyatt<br />
co-chaired the fundraising committee<br />
for the Terry Fox Youth Centre in Ottawa.<br />
Serving as a trustee and/or board<br />
member, Mr. Wyatt represented the<br />
American Management Association, the<br />
Pacific Basin Economic Council, Asian<br />
Pacific Foundation, The Royal Canadian<br />
Geographical Society (as a Fellow),<br />
St. Mary’s Hospital (Montreal), Calgary<br />
Philharmonic Society, the Schenley<br />
Awards, and the Calgary Winter<br />
Festival. Within the Canadian Chamber<br />
<strong>of</strong> Commerce, he served as National<br />
Chairman as well as chairman <strong>of</strong> a<br />
number <strong>of</strong> national and international<br />
committees. He was a founding<br />
member <strong>of</strong> B.C.N.I. (now known as the<br />
Canadian Council <strong>of</strong> Chief Executives).<br />
Because <strong>of</strong> these activities, he was a<br />
frequent participant in Canadian trade<br />
missions. He served as co-Chairman<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Calgary Economic Development<br />
Authority and chaired the Province <strong>of</strong><br />
Alberta’s Economic Study ‘Toward the<br />
Year 2000’.<br />
Mr. Wyatt is a Member <strong>of</strong> the Order<br />
<strong>of</strong> Canada, and was also awarded the<br />
Silver Jubilee Medal 1977 and the<br />
Commemorative Medal for the 125th<br />
Anniversary <strong>of</strong> Confederation 1992. He<br />
is the first recipient <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
Calgary’s International Businessman’s<br />
Award and in 2005 was again honoured<br />
to be selected as a first recipient <strong>of</strong> the<br />
noteworthy Canadian Unity Council’s<br />
Outstanding Canadian Award.<br />
